Nothing. I have nothing, see nothing, feel nothing, smell nothing. Then it happens. A pulse. My whole body feels it. I recognize it faintly- a heartbeat. I feel the urge to do something. I open my mouth wide and take in air. It's just a tiny breath, but it feels sustaining. Perfect. Another breath, another heartbeat. I open my eyes. Everything feels foreign, like I'm a visitor in my own body.
My bones no longer creak. They are young, small, and frail as they used to be. That 'used to be' seems so close, but so far away. I look around. Pipes are attached to every last bone of my body. The body itself, though, is a beautiful one- black with tiny rainbows on the paws, wingtips, eartips, and down the throat, and glowing red eyes. The smells are just as new to me as the body- metal and the smell of death. It's a frightening, fear-scent- one I smelled rarely in my 'used to be'. I can't quite place it, still.
"It's responsive." I hear a voice, like a knife grinding on stone.
It. I am that it. Am I then, without gender? These are not thoughts I am supposed to have, I can tell. I place the word for me now- newborn. I was something before that, though. Another life before this. A life I can no longer remember.
It comes back to me in shards. A black creature, a wolf- black with golden eyes?
We lived together. That wolf and I. We were friends, living alone and free. My name was Dark Rainbow. A name I plan to carry on for now.
Then... something happened. Searching back into the locked trove of memories somewhere in my brain, screaming fills my ears. TAKE THEM! JUST RUN! RUN!
That wolf. She saved my pups. But not me. I am dead. I was dead. So where am I now? Something in my mind begins to connect and my eyes open wide.
A place littered with stars below and above, all around us. She is next to me, smiling that sly smile she always has. "You ready?"
"Always ready, Twisted Heart."
"You ready to go back to the real world?"
"You bet I am."
A jump. A fall. I wasn't supposed to be here. This was the wrong place. Wrong time. Wrong WORLD.
I snap back to consciousness, terrified. I AM NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE.
"It's overheating! It's going to die!" says a fuzzy black shape, which sort of looks like a dragon. It's so hard to tell, everything is blurry.
They mean me. I'm going to die again. I begin to struggle, but sparks are flying everywhere and my heartbeat is fading again.
"It's having a neural overload. ACTIVATE THE MINDWIPE!"
"It won't be able to take it!"
"I DON'T CARE! JUST DO IT OR NETHERA WILL KILL YOU!"
I see two black animals in front of me.They begin hitting buttons on their control board. One of them hits a huge button and a screaming noise fills my ears. Everything goes red before my eyes and I begin to hyperventilate. I no longer have the energy to thrash anymore. I just sit there quietly, feebly twitching.
Then my heartbeat stops. Everything goes black. Nothingness engulfs me once more.
"E-238472-Codename-Dark Rainbow. Feminine. Power level- very, very high. Off the scale. Status- alive." The voice echoes in my head.
I open one eye, and then the other. Something has changed inside of me. Everything is sharper now. I turn to look at the Obsidians, and something clicks. Every single wish of theirs is my command. I will do anything and absolutely anything for them.
The smaller one, who is a sleek, black bipedal dragon with empty black eyes, stares at me. "It lived."
"I told you it would, you idiot." says the bigger one, who looks to me to be a huge falcon. He has the same eyes- no color. No whites. Just pure, glossy black. His body melts into a new shape- one matching mine, but a bit different. He asks, "What am I?" in a slightly amused voice.
"Canira. Dragon Canira." I say. My voice sounds new, dark, imposing. Different.
"Intelligence level- good. Very nice. Smooth, too. Where does her data bank come from?" he asks to his colleague.
"I believe Nethera herself supplied a lot of it. It's quite crafty. Got most of her personality. A bit of it was glitched up for some dumb reason we couldn't fix, but it was only about 0.1 percent. Queen Nethera said we had to get on with it, but then again, that was what caused the overheat."
"Where is the 0.1?"
"Actually, the overheat dimmed it down to about 0.09, but it was in the memory section."
"That caused the overheat?"
"Yeah."
"Well, that doesn't make any sense!!! It shouldn't have any memories, it's a baby!"
The dragon shrugs, his empty black eyes staring up at him unresponsively. The older one turns back into an eagle and claws him down the face, obviously fed up. Before my eyes, the wounds start to fill back in with glossy black stone.
I watch them for a while as they argue and fight. I sit on my wires, wondering what they were talking about. I don't remember anything except for a few minutes ago when I woke up. What memory problem?
The thoughts slowly blur themselves out. I feel stupid. I shouldn't be wondering about anything. These are my masters. They know what they're doing. I am as powerful as one of them at the age of about 5.22 minutes, but that power must be put to good use. I will serve them for life. It is my duty. There is nothing more to me.
I prick my ears up to hear the last bit of a wolf's howl. But... I shake it off. It's nothing. I turn to face them, standing up straight and proud, giant black dragon wings with rainbow claws on the front folded against my side. "E-238472-Codename-Dark Rainbow. Status- awaiting command. How may I serve you?"
