She's back. It's only been a month, but it feels like so much longer. I feel older and more robust. She looks at me in particular, and she looks ashamed for some reason.
"You're back!" Avery squeals, surrounding her in a big hug and knocking her off the black stone, which stops glowing.
"What happened to the tree?" she says.
"They burned it down." says a distraught Riana.
Dark Rainbow looks sad, and it's obvious 'they' was not taken out of context. She knows who did it just as well as I do.
"Well, the forest is still here, so Riana must've put up one heck of a fight." I speak up.
Riana laughs and Dark Rainbow does too, albeit a nervous, half-hearted chuckle. Dark Rainbow tucks her tail between her paws quietly and looks at the little flowers that have blossomed up everywhere.
"Well, now that we're all back together- it's time." Spritz says finally. As soon as we learn how to get there, we can go. I think we're all ready."
"The stone! Maybe the stone will help."
"That makes sense." I agree.
"I'm ready... I hope." Avery whispers.
"Good luck to all of you!" Riana says.
I know that now is the time. I can feel it. "To destroy the Obsidians..." Spritz says, carefully placing his paw on the rock. The trident symbol lights up blue.
"To save the ones who have already been taken." Avery slaps her paw onto the rock and the wings and horn glow pink.
I sense a solemnity in the air that can't be explained in words, and I say, "To make sure that this never happens again." I place my paw on the rock and the fire symbol lights up red beneath my paw.
To my surprise, nothing happens. "We're missing something!" Avery announces.
"I get it! But what?!" Spritz yells over to her, even though we're really close together.
"Wait. Remember when Dark Rainbow landed on the rock?" I say, much quieter.
"It lit up!" Avery laughs. "Forget Three. There are FOUR of us!"
Dark Rainbow gasps in surprise, but only I seem to notice how faked it is. She knows something we don't and I keep it to myself. Where did you go? What do you have to hide from me?
She alights on the rock, and the top of the rock glows red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and finally the light ceases. I feel myself fall into a portal, the last thing I see is Riana's face, a worried, bittersweet expression on her face.
I hear her voice one last time. "Good luck!" and then quieter, "I love you, Torch!"
She knew all along. She knew it wouldn't work out for us and she kept trying, she knew we would bring ruin and she fought until the end. I feel so guilty, and in the darkness, I call out to her, "I'm sorry."
I'm sorry.
Then she's gone.
