Ch. 7 - The Truth

"So do you have any homework?" Reed asked me as we were walking down the street.

"Yeah, but only an algebra page," I told him.

"Oh um....my parents won't be home until 5:00 and I was wondering if you wanted to hang out?"

"Sure" I said,"Sounds like fun."

"Cool, follow me" he said, and he led me inside. "You can put your stuff down anywhere, I'll grab us some snacks." I put down my things, and then we went into the woods in between our houses. He brought the food, so we had a little picnic and talked.

"Do you need to call your parents or anything? You know, to let them know where you are."

"Nah, my dad doesn't get off work until 5:30, and my mom works as long as the hospital needs her to," I told him.

"Oh, do you have any siblings?"

"Yeah," I said,"Two brothers and a sister."

"Well, where are they?"

"My brothers are at preschool, and my sister is doing some kind of after school thing every other Monday. I don't really know.

"Cool, my brother has football practice. Hey, just wondering, earlier when you said thank goodness it was me and not Emily, what did you mean? I know she's kinda weird around me, but she's usually good around other people." Should I tell him? I just look at him and smile a little.

"Um...well.....I'll make this short. Let's just say she's a..." Okay, just say it. "A b-"

"A bitch?" He whispered.

"I was gonna say bully, but yeah, that too." he laughed, but I didn't. I got a lump in my throat, and tried to hold back tears. I didn't think it bothered me, but talking about it made me want to cry. I mean, I shouldn't care. What's wrong with me? I totally forgot Reed was there.

"Awe, your tearing up. What did she do?" I just looked at him then looked away. "Oh I'm so sorry, I should have never even brought it up." he said as he wrapped his arm around me, trying to comfort me.

I didn't cry for long. Not even a minute, but when I stopped, he kept his arm around me, and pulled me even closer. I leaned my head on his shoulder, and he leaned his head on mine. We just talked about other things, happy things. When we ran out of things to talk about, I told him I had to leave because it was almost 5:00.

"Okay, see you tomorrow. And I'll be at the bus stop tomorrow." he smiled at me as I got up to leave.

"Okay, see you then." As I was walking back home, I thought about the conversation I had with Reed. Then, I thought about when he put his arm around me and pulled me close. So close we were breathing the same air.....and now that I think about it, it was kind of nice. I know we just met today and all but......and I know this is crazy, but I think I like...like him.
