Katie's POV:
"What do you mean you have other plans?" Mary asks me as we walk out of school. I twirl some of my hair saying, "You know, that's a funny story-"

"Katie, if you turn down Chase Anderson, you can say goodbye to being popular." Mary tells me, walking to the other side of my car. We get in, I start the car, then turn back to Mary.

"Maybe popularity isn't for me." I suggest as I drive us out of the parking lot. "What?! Don't you like people looking up to you? And being above everyone?"

"What do you mean 'being above everyone'?" I ask Mary, keeping my eyes on the road. I hear Mary shift in her seat. "You know, like are you really gonna turn down Chase for some track nerd?"

I slam on the brakes, stopping in the middle of the road. I turn the hazard lights so people know I'm not moving.

"Where is this all coming from Mary?" I ask worryingly.

Mary sighs. "I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just don't understand why you don't like Chase! He's so beautiful, and handsome, and he's on the baseball team ..."

"I know, but that's not what I'm looking for in a guy, Mary." I tell her. "I'm looking for a funny, smart, good looking guy, and Chase doesn't fit it."

Mary's eyes look down at the dashboard; avoiding me. A car zooms past as she shakes her head in disagreement. "Even though I don't get it, I'm gonna support my best friend no matter what." Mary smiles. She opens her arms, waiting for my forgiveness.

I can't help but smile, hugging her. "Your lucky I forgive easily." I tell her.

She laughs next to me, causing me to laugh. When we let go, I turn the hazard lights off and return to driving home.

We're not even a foot away from where we stopped when Mary asks, "So who's date are you going to?"

"Um, what do you mean?" I ask her, focusing on the road ahead of me.

"You need to choose who your seeing tonight right? Dreamy Chase Anderson and the awesome dinner date, or Tyler Forrest at the car wash you invited him to." Mary explains to me. Well I know which date Mary wants to go to.

Chase or Tyler ... why is it so hard? I only like one of them ... right? I turn the next left into our neighborhood. I drive up to the curb in front of Mary's house and park the car.

"Your place." I announce. Mary undos her seatbelt and grabs her backpack from the space in front of her. "It's one or the other Katie. I know the one you choose is the one for you. See ya tomorrow!", She waves, stepping out of my car.

She walks in front of my car and walking to her house. At the door, she looks back and waves before walking inside and closing the door.

I sigh out loud, shift gears, and start driving again. It's a short drive until I'm back at my stepmom's house. In plain sight on our driveway is a car I never would of thought she'd buy.

Sitting in our driveway is a checkered black and white monster truck with the initials CV painted on the side.

Where am I supposed to park? This monster takes up both spaces in our driveway, and it's blocking me from parking in the garage.

I huff. This is so unfair. I park on the curb in front of our house. I slam the door shut and walk to the front door. I burst inside, my hair falling in front of my face.

My Stepmother laughs at me from the living room. "Your literally a joke Kat, it's hilarious!" She laughs out loud. I push the hair out of my face and stomp over to my stepmom. "You bought a monster truck!?" I yell.

She smirks, turning her face back to the tv. "I told you you'll be crying when you saw it, but anger is good as well."

"How am I supposed to do this before 7?" I say, putting my head in my hands.

"What do you have to do before 7?" My stepmom asks interested. Oh my gosh I said that out loud. I can't tell her I'm going on a date, she'll never let me leave; what's an excuse, what's an excuse!

I look up and answer, "I just wanna um ... go to the library ... to study."

She turns to me, one eyebrow raised and looks unconvinced. I gulp as she stands up, looking me straight into the eye.

"Ok, whatever, so long as my new car gets washed." She says, walking into the kitchen. I sigh, holding my chest. That was close.

Ding-Dong!

"Get the door, will ya Kat?" My stepmother asks.

I roll my eyes and walk over to the door. When I open it, Tyler's standing on the other side.
