Tyler's POV:
"Jax, do you know who this belongs to?" I ask him, holding up the lipstick. He looks at it blankly and answers, "Yours?" I slap my hand on my head.Jaxon Marsh is my best friend. Not the smartest of the bunch, but he's funny enough to be a comedian. Taller than me, and I'm 5'10, curly brown hair, Mexican accent, and attracts all the girls. I kind of wish I was him, just to be noticed by a girl.
We weren't even supposed to meet, but fated decided we sit next to each other in English, and Jax would ask all the questions in the world.
"Katie Vanilla." I state dramatically. His face stays the same, then his mouth starts smiling at the edges. "You stole it?! Dude that's dirty!" Jax says proudly, grabbing the lipstick. Yeah right, like his mischief is spreading to me.
"I didn't steal it, it accidentally feel into my bag when she was looking for change to-"
"Dude, all I'm hearing is blah blah blah." He interrupts me.
I sigh. "The point is, I finally have a reason to talk to Katie."
Jax then starts chuckling. "What's so funny?" "Well, have you ever talked to girls before, and your not going to embarrass yourself?" He asks me, passing back the lipstick.
"Yes!" I answer, feeling my cheeks getting warmer.
"It's Ok Tyler, we all have to start at some point, and your starting junior year of highschool." He says, trying to encourage me. Obviously it's not working. "Thanks that makes me feel way better." I say sarcastically.
Jax laughs and puts his arm around my neck. "Hint on girls, they love it when you play hard to get." He whispers.
"Right ...." I disagree.
Out of nowhere, the bell rings to get to class. "Gotta go to physics. See ya at lunch!" Jax says, turning the other way. "See ya." I say, waving. I open my locker and grab my textbook and close my locker as quickly as possible. Lucky, my locker isn't too far from my first period. I turn to around to go to my first period class and, KATIE!
She just walked in with May. This is your chance to talk to her, go!
I speed walk across the hall and walk through the door. As soon as I'm in class, the late bell rings. "Hurry Tyler, you've got a warm up due." Mrs. Warren says to me.
"Sorry." I say, and walk to my seat in the third row, across from Katie. I take my seat and start doing the worksheet on the desk. Man these are all easy! Absolute value problems are child's play to my brain.
"Alright everyone listen up!" Mrs. Warren speaks up, getting our attention. "Today's work is from page 60, numbers 1 through 25. If you don't finish in class, do whatever you have left for homework. It's about absolute value, so you should know it,"
While she pauses, I can hear some disagreement from my classmates. "But, if you need any help just come up and ask. Alright everybody?" She confirms.
"Yes ma'am." Most of the class answers back. Mrs. Warren starts walking around to see who needs help. I don't, this is easier than baking a cake. I finish my warm up quick and start doing the work from the textbook.
While I'm trying to find the first x of question 17,I hear someone sigh loudly to the left of me. I glance and of course it's Katie. I see she's still working on the warm up from the beginning of class. Why isn't she asking for help? Mrs. Warren could help her if she just put her hand up.
Wait a minute, I can help! And return her lipstick! I start grabbing my work and before I can close my textbook, Ms. Warren walks up to Katie.
There goes my chance. I put my bag back on the ground and sigh. What am I thinking! Katie's never going to know I exist! I slouch back in my chair, and when doing so, Mrs. Warren walks up to my desk. "Slacking off Tyler? I thought you were one of the good students?" She asks me.
I immediately sit straight and get back to work. I don't want my teachers thinking I'm a bad kid. I mean I'm not, but I still don't want to look lazy.
"Sorry ma'am." I reply, finishing question 17. As I'm working, I feel her look over my shoulder. "You really know what your doing." She complements. "Thanks! Math comes easy to me." I brag. "Say could you help Katie, she's struggling and I have to get to everyone else asking for help." Mrs. Warren asks me.
"Really?! I mean- yes I can help Katie." I answer smoothly.
"Thank you Tyler." Then she walks towards the back of the classroom to help someone else. I can't believe it! I get to help Katie Vanilla on her Algebra II work! I, quietly as I can, scoot my desk over to Katie's.
She's biting her pencil, staring at the first problem on the warm up. Hey, she's wearing the shirt she bought yesterday! I guess she really likes that one. Now, which first? The work or the lipstick? Let's go with what the teacher said first.
"H-Hi Vanilla- no I mean Katie. I'm sorry." I get out awkwardly.
Why am I so shy? I talk to her all the time at the shop.
Hearing my failed greeting, she looks up at me. "Hey." She greets naturally.
Then she returns to staring at her paper. She's so much calmer than me, cooler than me; probably from being around so many different people, because she's popular.
I'm not saying I don't know people, it's just like I'm invisible to most people. I'm sitting silently next to her! Say something! "So uh, I came over-"
Riiiiing!
Hearing the bell, Katie immediately starts packing up her unfinished work. "I'm sorry I gotta get to my next class. You could help me at lunch if you want?" She asks me. Katie Vanilla just asked me to lunch! This day is going from good to amazing!
"Sure- I mean I would like you- I mean to and-" I physically cover my mouth with my hands before I say something embarrassing.
She grabs her textbooks and looks forward. Do I like not exist or something? "Ok see ya later then." She say happily. Then she rushes out of the room.
I don't believe it ...
KATIE VANILLA ASKED ME TO LUNCH!
