Chapter 9

Melody

I slid an earphone into one of my ears and started to relax as the music started to play. Maths is stressful, but the music helps with that.

I start copying equations off of the board when I hear a faint giggle come from my right, I turn around and come face to face with somebody called Alicia. One of the popular girls.

As soon as we made eye contact, Alicia and her group of friends all burst into laughter, causing the teacher to look back and tell them off for disrupting the class.

I rolled my eyes and focused back on my work. They like to pick on the fact that my eyes are discolored. Bullies try to find the smallest insecurities to torment you about.

I looked up from my work as the bell rang, signalling the end of the day. I quickly gathered my stuff, placed it into my bag and left the classroom without a word.

I approached my locker to place my books inside, ready for tomorrow. While rummaging around in my locker I hear somebody clear their throat. I turn around and find myself surrounded by Alicia and her friends.

"Come on guys will you leave me alone for once, I know my eyes are strange, let it go and move on with your life."

Alicia glanced back at her friends and started to laugh. I closed my locker and eyed Ruby across the hallway, staring at us. I nod my head, silently telling her to stay away but wait for me. She nods back.

"I guess that's why you can't make any friends, they're scared to be seen walking around with a freak like you ."

I sighed loudly.

"I've heard all of this before Alicia, try to become more creative when mocking people next time."

Suddenly, Alicia lurched forward and pinned me against my locker, her forearm pressing against my neck.

I glanced at Ruby, who started to walk towards me, but was held back by a couple of her friends. As I saw my sister struggle, I felt anger boil inside of me, growing stronger by the second.

"What about that boy Melody? That new boy you've been hanging around with? I bet he's only willing to be friends with you because he pities you."

The anger inside of me starts to get stronger, until it becomes hard to keep inside. I look around and spot Alfie turning the corner, stopping when he sees me.

"Nobody wants you Melody, you'd have been better off dying along with your parents."

I glanced down at Alicia, peering at the smirk that covered her face, and then my anger consumed me.

I pushed her away, and she flew back, hitting the lockers behind her with tremendous force. All of her friends fell backwards, including Ruby and Alfie.

Heat coursed through my veins as I stared at the people around me, all glaring back at me with fear in their eyes.

I glanced down at my hands, and gasped when I saw that they were glowing pink. I looked up at everybody again, and finally at Ruby, who had fear written across her face. She stood up and ran away.

My breathing intensified and I ran away from there, ending up in the girls bathroom. Mirrors lined the wall above the sinks and they let me have a look at myself. I gasped at the sight.

A pink aura surrounded me, and seemed to come from the earphone still in my ear from class. My hair had grown darker, like my mother's. And my eyes were glowing bright pink. Both of my eyes were pink!

I lifted my hand up and took out my earphone, and watched in awe as the pink aura faded away and I returned to normal.

What was that? What on Earth did I just do?

I walked towards the door and peeked outside, everybody seemed to have left already. I stepped outside into the corridor and headed back towards my locker where I left my bag, my body shaking.

As I got closer I noticed a post it note stuck to my locker door. I picked up my bag from the floor and put it on my back.

I took the post it note off of the door and read the writing on it.

Meet me out on the back yard after school tomorrow. We need to talk.
