Alec's head hurt when he woke up. Next to him sat Magnus and Ragnor. "Morning. Sleep well?" Magnus asked.
"Yeah. How long have I been asleep?"
"Only a few hours. You crashed out once you reached my room. Complete exhaustion after your journey here."
"Oh. I'm really sorry."
"Don't apologise." Ragnor smiled warmly.
Alec shifted his gaze to look at the room now his vision wasn't hazy with sleep. Almost directly in front of him, there were two gaps in a bookshelf. Thinking nothing of it, he continued to glance around.
"Can I go home now?" Alec asked.
"Afraid not." Magnus sighed. "A storm's rolling in. And before you ask, we don't have a phone and if you had one, it must've fallen out whilst you were lost."
Alec groaned and fell back against the pillow. "Great. That's just delightful." he mumbled. "Is there really no way to contact my family?"
"Unfortunately, not." Ragnor spoke.
"So, I can't contact my family to tell them I'm safe?" Alec asked.
"Not until the storm is passed and then I can take you home." Magnus explained. Alec sighed heavily.
"Jace is going to be beside himself." Alec muttered.
"Who's Jace?"
"My Parabatai. I disappeared for what... A week before because I was called to Idris. I forgot to tell Jace and, as you may know, electronic devices don't work in Idris so I couldn't call or text and I couldn't receive" them either. I was too busy to fire message so when I entered into a zone outside of Idris where phones work after that week, I had twenty missed calls and nineteen texts. All from Jace."
"That is one hell of a Parabatai. Has he ever disappeared and you've been worried?"
"He leaves all the time. I'm used to him turning up a few days later. It's 'not like me' to leave and not tell him. He gets worried. Thinks I'm fragile or something."
"You're anything but. You survived an entire day in the forest." Ragnor marvelled.
"Is it that bad?" Alec asked, scared for the answer.
"Well, you see, there's a reason that once a week we scan the woods. People, mundanes mostly, turn up dead. Some mauled by Werewolves, others bit by Vampires and a select few who starve or die of thirst before we can get to them." he explained.
"Morbid." Alec grumbled. He sat up again and faced Magnus. "I feel as though I'm forgetting something..." he trailed, making eye contact with Magnus. He saw something flit across his eyes but it was gone too quickly for Alec to decipher what it was.
"Like what?" Magnus quizzed.
"I'm sure it's not important. Probably about something from back home, is all."
"Hmm. Well, when you remember, feel free to yell it to the heavens so everyone finds out what it is you forgot." Magnus joked, causing Alec to crack a grin. "Ragnor does that."
"It's merely an excited yell that I remember something." Ragnor sniffed, indignantly. Alec let out an unattractive snort and covered his face to hide his laughter.
