Chapter Fourteen

Devin

A few weeks after the hospital incident, Charisma stayed home more and more. She was always sick. She didn't want to tell me what was going on, and I didn't want to pressure her, so I had to go to school all by myself. I just chilled with boys.

"So what you and Charisma do at the party?" Kevin asked me.

I was drunk as hell, and I hardly remembered anything from that night. Even Charisma was drunk, and she didn't even really drink. She never brought it up, so I didn't think anything of it.

"We didn't do anything," I said noticing everybody's expression.

My other boy Ray instantly handed me his phone. I looked at the screen and saw Charisma riding me like a damn pony. At first I didn't believe the video because I couldn't see any faces, but once Charisma leaned back, I couldn't deny that it was us.

"Yup, man, I had to take a video because trust me, you and Charisma had mad alcohol, for real," Ray said.

"Send that to my phone," I said grabbing my book bag, "I got to go ya'll."

"Duce, man."

I raced outside to my car, and once I got inside, I noticed Sharice standing behind me before I put my key in the ignition.

What the fuck does this bitch want? I thought. I tried to ignore the girl, but she didn't move a muscle as I revved my engine. Dammit!

I turned off the car and got out the car. "What the fuck do you want, Sharice?"

"A second chance or something," she said putting her hand on her hip.

I closed my eyes and sighed. "You don't get a second chance, man, so deal with it. And move the fuck away from my car," I yelled getting back inside the car.

She laughed and walked closer to me. I could nearly smell the chocolate perfume she was wearing. I had to admit, it turned me on just a little.

"You wasn't nothing from the start, you know that?"

I was convinced that she was literally crazy as hell. I was still trying to figure out why I let myself go out with her in the first place. To be honest, I think it was the pussy that had me running after her.

When I got into the car again, I rolled down the window, and she just stared at me.

"Good luck on your baby."

Baby? Me? The fuck was she talking about? "What are you talking about Sharice?"

"You didn't know? I work in the maternity ward at Jackson North, and guess who I saw? Ms. Charisma, yup, she a couple weeks pregnant, and I know Jarell is her boyfriend, so he could be the father. But it might be you since you guys kind of had sex and all," she said laughing.

"Pregnant?"

"Yeah, pregnant. Shit, I wonder what the school is going to think. Best friend gets best friend pregnant even though she has a boyfriend."

I quickly grabbed her by her neck, and I could see the terror in her eyes.

"You say anything about this, and I will break you in thirty different pieces." She started losing the color in her face, but I shook her again. "Did you hear me? Bitch, talk."

"Okay, okay," she said coughing.

When I let her go, she fell on the floor and started gasping for air. I got in the car and backed up. I had to see Charisma. There were so many things rushing through my head. I mean pregnant? No, Charisma wouldn't just let that happen to her. She had big future ahead of her. Sharice was right though. Me or Jarell could be the father of her baby, and I didn't know how she was going to deal that. Shit, I didn't even know how to handle that.

When I got to her house, I saw Charisma's grandma sitting on the front porch knitting.

"Hey, Mrs. Williams," I said giving her a hug.

"How are you doing, Devin?" she asked.

"I'm fine," I lied. I was about to have a damn heart attack.

"Well, Charisma is in her room. She hasn't left out of there since this yesterday. Can you find out what's wrong?" She asked. I nodded my head and walked into the house.

I was so nervous to talk to her. What was I supposed to say? I didn't know how Charisma was going to respond, but if the baby was mine, I was going to take care of my baby. I was ready to be a father. I had money coming in almost every day. I would never be like my father. She could keep on dating Jarell if she wanted to, but if that was my son or daughter, he would have no say in the matter.

As I walked to her door, I took a deep breath and opened it slowly. I saw Charisma standing in front of the mirror looking at her belly and rubbing it. I cleared my throat, and she turned around and quickly pulled down her shirt.

"Damn, Devin, are you serious? Don't you know how to knock?" she questioned sitting down on the bed as I walked in and closed the door behind me.

"Sorry, next time I will do that, but we need to talk about something," I said sitting in her computer chair and rolling in front of her.

"Ok, about what?"

"You being pregnant."

"What?" she said coughing.

"Charisma, don't hide it, man. I knew where we were at when I brought you to the hospital. You're pregnant?" I asked, and tears started rolling down her cheek. I got up and gave her a hug. "Listen, it's okay, man. I'm here."

"What about Jarell?"

I knew this was going to come up. Jarell was always the topic of the conversation. If she was pregnant, her mind would automatically think that Jarell was the father and not me at all.

"What about him?"

"He is the father of my child, Dev." I got up and wiped my face. She never thought that it could be me. "We created this baby together, but I don't know what to tell him."

I turned to her and just shook my head in disgust. "Charisma, have you ever thought that someone other than Jarell could be the father?"

"No, why?"

"The night at the party?"

"I remember going home after the party, so I know I didn't have sex with anyone."

I couldn't take it anymore. I took out my phone and threw it on the bed. "Play the video."

She looked up at me and slowly took the phone. "Who the hell is this fucking?" she asked. I just stayed quiet; she would notice anyways. "What the? Oh, no," she said throwing the phone back at me.

"Yeah, we had sex."

"So that means that..."

"Yeah, I could be the father too."

She started crying so hard, and I just held her in my arms. Reality finally hit both of us. "What am I going to tell Jarell?"

"You aint going to tell him anything, aight? Just let everything flow. I know he doesn't like me as it is."

"I mean he has to know."

"Don't tell him anything, aight?" She looked at me with confusion on her face, and her hazel eyes literally stared a hole through me. "You heard me?" I asked kissing her forehead.

"Yeah, I heard you."

"Father or not, you know I'm going to be there regardless of the consequences. Now if this is my baby, you know I'm making stable money, so taking care of you guys won't be a problem at all."

"Thank you so much," she said giving me a soft kiss on my lips. I was so mesmerized I couldn't say anything.

"Told you, predictable," she said.

"It's not my fault."

Maybe having this child was going to be good for us.
