Chapter Twenty

Devin

I was already frustrated the Kemarc came back, but I was also happy that I had him back in my life. I got up from the couch and put some water in a kettle and put it on the stove.

"You seriously going to throw your mail on the table like that?" Charisma asked.

"It's not that important," I answered.

She grabbed one of the envelopes and read the address. "It's from your dad," she said opening it, "I thought you didn't talk to your dad?"

"I don't."

She reached in the envelope and took out the cash that was inside. From the looks of it, there were only hundred dollar bills. Charisma sat there and counted all the money in the envelope and the other envelopes that sat on the table.

"This is over $5,000. You know what you could do with this money, Dev?"

"Yeah, but I'm not doing anything with it."

"Why not?" she asked stacking up the money.

"It's money from the enemy. I recall my father leaving me to fend for myself, and now he wants me to accept his money?"

It wasn't going down like that. There were a lot of things that I could use the $5,000 for, but not my dad's money. I could provide for myself financially, emotionally, and physically. I didn't need him.

"Well, at least talk to him and try to start over."

"No," I said covering the money, "If he wants me in his life, he could knock on that door and ask to. I didn't ask him to bribe him."

The kettle startled whistling a little, and I got up and walked into the kitchen taking it off the stove. "He never took the chance to get his own self straight in life. What do I need him to help me for?"

"Is he still living in Detroit?" she asked as I put hot water into a big bowl and soaked a cloth in it.

"Yes, he still lives in Detroit, still ganging and all."

"Oh, wow, ain't he like 35 now?"

"Yup, I don't know why this nigga still on these childish games when he got a kid, you know?" I took the cloth out of the bowl and squeezed the excess water off. "I mean if he wanted...just forget it."

I knelt beside the couch while Charisma lay down. I lifted up her shirt and rubbed her little belly. She giggled a little.

"You need to stop."

I put the warm towel over her stomach, and she sighed and closed her eyes. I just wanted her to relax. After all the drama, I knew she needed it.

Knock! Knock!

Seriously, man? I thought.

"Ay, yo, Devin," I heard someone yell as they continued to bang on my door. Charisma opened her eyes so fast, it scared me.

"I'm going in your room if you need me," she said getting up and walking to the back.

Who the fuck is knocking on my door this late at night?

When I opened the door, I saw Lil Pee Wee and Mac, two dudes I sold weed for. They was like mentors to me since they also lived a regular life. They were able to balance their kids, girlfriends, having their own businesses, and having this weed business on the side.

"What?" they both asked and barged inside.

"It looks like you don't have any damn business around," Mac said sitting on the couch.
