Chapter Thirty
Devin
Three Months Later...
All I could do was think about my mother, but I tried to not let it affect me because Charisma was my main concern. She didn't really talk like she used to. She was like a zombie or something. I knew she was still heart broken by the death of her grandma even after three months.
"Babe?"
"What?" she snapped.
"Listen, don't get all mad at me, okay? It's going to be alright."
She rolled her eyes. "Yup, just say anything to make me feel better. I just want to go home and sleep," she said.
I couldn't wait until we had the baby. When I got to the house, I saw someone standing on the front porch, and it looked like my mother's daughter.
Really? What is she doing here?
"Wait here," I told Charisma.
"Why?"
"You wanna look for yourself?" I asked pointing at the door. She looked up and saw her Devina and then got out the car.
"Who is that?" she asked like I was cheating or something.
"My mother's daughter."
She stepped out the car and quickly started walking up the stairs.
"What you doing?" I questioned walking after her.
"Hi, I'm Charisma, um, are you here for Devin?"
Devina nodded her head.
"Damn," I mumbled as I saw them go inside the apartment.
I stayed outside and leaned on the car trying to think of what I was going to say. This was the first time I saw her since that day, and she had no clue who I was, so I assumed my mother never mentioned me. I took a deep breath and walked up the stairs into the house and saw Devina and Charisma talking.
"We were waiting on you, Devin," Charisma said.
"You were?"
"I mean if it's the wrong time to come here, I can come back another time," Devina said getting up. I quickly grabbed her hand.
"It's okay, so what you here for?
"Well, I found your card on the kitchen counter. My mom looked at it a few times but never called. I'm really starting to wonder what's going on."
"Obviously, you don't know. Justine is my mother. I don't know how in the hell she has a 16-year old daughter, but..."
"Look, I didn't come here to argue. I came for a decent explanation. Why after all this time did you come to our home and try to mess up a perfect family?"
"Why I did mess up a family? You don't even know half the story. Your so-called mother abandoned me."
"No, that's not right. My mother has been there every day of my life."
"Because she's been lying! You don't get it do you? When you were born, my mother had the choice to keep you and go with your father, or have you and give you to your father and stay with me. You know what she did? She had you and created a new life for herself. I remember her being pregnant, but then she just up and disappeared. She continued to lie to my father until he split too." The anger was starting to build in me.
"So we're brother and sister?" she asked sitting down.
"Obviously, my mother didn't name you Devina for no reason."
"What?"
"My name is Devin. I'm named after my father. I guess she wanted to continue the tradition, so she named you Devina."
"I really wish she would've just told me everything instead of keeping it a secret."
"It's not your fault, so did she send you here?"
"No, I came myself. I think I should know who my older brother is since I have one."
I smiled at the statement and gave her a little hug. "I appreciate it."
Maybe there was a soft side to her. I was nervous about building a relationship with my sister. I mean we didn't even know each other, but she seemed cool. We spent the rest of the night talking, and she filled me in on the ins-and-outs of our mother's new life. Devina was basically a rich kid.
"Well, I got to go because I know my mom is probably tripping," she chuckled. Being alone in the hood would get her fucked up.
"Yeah, you should," I said getting up, and then I heard a knock at the door. When I opened it. I saw my mom.
"Devina, what you are doing here?" she questioned. I looked at her like she was crazy. She didn't even acknowledge me.
"So why didn't you tell me?" Devina questioned looking at Justine like a stranger.
"Come on," she said grabbing her hand, but Devina pulled back.
"For sixteen years, you hid from me the fact that I have an older brother. Why?"
"You know why I didn't tell you?" Devina crossed her arms and nodded her head. "I had to promise your father that I would never speak of my son and my ex-husband again, and that's what I did. I kept it quiet, so you wouldn't question who he was," she said with tears streaming down her cheeks, "I didn't want to leave him, but I had to. But after seeing my son after so many years is something that I really cherish. I realized that I made a terrible mistake."
"Well, dad just has to deal with it," she said.
"Son?" I heard my mother say.
"Yeah," I said looking down at the ground.
She walked over to me and gave me a hug. I immediately started. "I missed you so much."
"I missed you too," I said, "I want you to meet somebody."
When I looked over at Charisma, she looked a little sick.
"Babe?"
"Sorry to interrupt the moment, but we have to go to the hospital now," she said holding her stomach.
"For what?"
"It's time."
My eyes widened. As much as I anticipated this day, I wasn't ready. I saw my mom on the phone, and she looked worried.
"Yes, Tyler, I'm going to be late coming home, okay? No, I found Devina. I just have an emergency down at the office," she said hanging up and looking at Charisma, "Alright, honey, I'm going to need you to open your legs and take deep breaths, okay?"
Charisma nodded her head.
"Mom's an OB/GYN," Devina said.
I came over to Charisma and held her hand. She was squeezing so hard, I felt like she was gonna rip it off.
"Ok, now I need you to push until I count to ten, okay?"
Charisma nodded her head again and started pushing,
"One...two...three...four...five...six..."
"Ahhhhhh," Charisma screamed in my ear.
"Come on, hun, you got to push," my mom said, and she pushed even harder. Next thing you know, I saw a head pop out, and then all I heard was crying. It was the most fascinating thing I think I've ever seen.
"It's a boy," my mom said full of tears.
"We are going to name him Demetri Cameron Wilson," she said.
"Wait, I think there's one more," my mom said.
One more? "Wait, what do you mean one more? I was told we were only having one."
"Sometimes things can be misread. Maybe one of the babies was blocking the other one. Charisma, baby, you're going to have a push a little harder."
I couldn't believe that we were having twins.
