Chapter Twenty-One

Charisma

I just dropped straight onto the floor and started crying. What the hell just happened? Life was only getting worst. I was five months pregnant, and Devin was on his way to the damn police department. Tiana was trying to comfort and make me feel better, but it wasn't working.

"What going on here?" Mr. J asked coming inside of the store. He picked up some of this things that were on the floor and put it back on the racks. He saw me crying, so he knelt down on one knee. "What's wrong, Charisma?" he asked me, but I was too emotional to even talk.

"Devin got arrested," Ed said taking a deep breath.

"What did he get arrested for?"

"Drug trafficking," I said grabbing my cell phone. I called Toya since she was the only one I had now.

"Hello?" she answered.

"Toya, you need to come and pick me up," I said wiping my tears and walking into the break room.

"I mean I'm right outside. I was going to come in there to get something."

"Alright, I'm coming outside."

I put my things in my bag and walked outside to see Mr. J, Ed, and Tiana still cleaning up the mess that I made.

"I'm so sorry, you guys. You I know I didn't mean to."

"It's okay, Charisma, you go and try to find a way to get Devin situated. I'm going to stop by and check up on you, okay?" Mr. J said.

I nodded my head and gave him a hug before I walked out the store.

"So what's up? What's going on?" Toya asked me as I got into the car.

"Devin got arrested."

"Devin got what? For what?"

"Drug trafficking," I said looking out the window trying not to show my bloodshot eyes as my tears continued to flow. Devin meant a lot to me.

"Damn, man, me and Kevin broke up. This day is crazy."

Everybody was going through some outrageous mess. "Why?" I asked.

"Oh, he has a girlfriend. She's in college too," she said chewing on her gum like a cow feeding on grass for the first time.

"So he didn't even try to find a way to explain himself?" I asked.

"Hell no, this dude shrugged his shoulders and said, 'it is what it is,'" she said laughing, "Kevin is so damn lucky I ain't stab his eyes."

We finally got to the apartment after her talking about the countless ways she could have fucked up Kevin's life, which was annoying. We both got inside, and I sat on the couch and went straight to my laptop to look for the police department numbers.

"Damn, you aint got shit in your fridge," Toya said searching inside like a damn raccoon.

"We cook inside this house. Something you don't do."

Suddenly, I heard a door slam, and Kemarc came outside with no shirt on and just his boxers. He was looking really cute and all, but that was not really concerning me.

"Good morning, fam," he said yawning loudly, "Where's Devin?" he asked me as he sat by me.

"He's in jail."

"He's where?" I could see the muscles in his body tense up. He got up and started pacing back and forth. "How is he in jail though?"

"Drug trafficking. They found five pounds of weed in the house."

"I was here the whole day, and the police never barged through here," he said grabbing his t-shirt

What the hell is going on right now?

"Charisma, you think I can have this?" Toya asked coming out of the kitchen, and she stopped right in her tracks as she stared at Kemarc. Kemarc looked at her and smiled. She walked over to me and nudged me on the shoulder. Obviously, she was feeling him.

"Kemarc, this is my best friend Toya. Toya, this is Devin's cousin Kemarc."

"Nice to meet you."

"You too, beautiful," he said kissing her hand. I just shook my head.

"Hello? Devin? Jail?" I snapped my fingers at them as they gazed into each other's eyes.

"Damn, I'm sorry, it's just that..."

"Alright, you guys can plan ya'll date later!"

Kemarc quickly put on some Nike slides, and we both followed him outside. When we got downstairs to the washing room, it was a total wreck. Both the washing machine and the dryer were flipped over, and there was big hole in the wall like a miner was looking for gold.

"Dammit," Kemarc said punching the pole beside him.

I turned to see an old man who lived right by the wash room outside smoking a cigar.

"Um, excuse me, sir, did you see what happened earlier?" I asked.

He blew out a cloud of smoke into my face. "Police just came through and rummaged through that door and started beating through that wall like they was beating they own child. I'm telling you they went through here so fast. It was like they knew exactly what they was looking for," he said taking another puff.

"This is not good," Kemarc said, "Do you know what's going to happen to him?"

I looked at him like he was crazy. "What is going to happen?"

"Somebody set him up, and trust me, he's going to have to pay for it now," he sighed, "We have to go see Devin, man. Five pounds of straight zona, county property."

"Does this have to do with Pee Wee and Mac?"

"That weed right there was meant for a special delivery. Five pounds was given to Devin, so he could keep it secure. We hid it behind the washing machine in the walls, so it wouldn't be noticeable, and every second Saturday of the month, we Devin sold a pound to him." He got up and looked at me, "Mac and Pee Wee do not, I mean do not fuck with the merchandise. That shit takes long to fucking grow, and when they find out that they weed now belongs to the damn government, they are going to beat Devin into a damn coma."

I had to help Devin get out of this or else.
