Chapter One

“It’s been four hours, tell Michael and the others to head back if they hadn’t found anything yet. They went far enough… and remind them to cover their trail back. I don’t want the rogues to think we were on to them.” Jacob told Gabriel as he watched the sunrise from his office window. In the last four hours, he constantly kept checking on the land and the girl. Michael and the others were still following the rogues trail but still couldn’t catch up to them. Jacob was concerned about them being too far away for the pack link to work. He feared that they might had got attacked before sending out a text letting him know that they were in danger.

“Yes sir.” Gabriel answered while feeling worried about being too far away from his twin. They were usually together in hunting parties to watch each other’s backs. Gabriel took out his phone and massaged Michael the Alpha’s orders. A minute later, he got a reply from his brother that they were on their way. Gabriel informed the Alpha and excused himself to go check on girl. He didn’t know why but he felt protective of the girl they found. His wolf was afraid that she might die. His wolf’s fears become his own. It was very odd that he felt the need to care for her when she wasn’t his family, pack or soul mate.

Every werewolf had a soul mate that completed them. They lived for each other and every wolf dreams of finding their own. Yet, he wanted to protect the girl and look after her. The whole situation confused him. He thought that there had to be something more to her, she couldn’t be just human; why else would the rogues target her? Why would someone risk their lives to hide her under the willow tree? Did he leave her there so they could find her? The second he saw her in the Alpha’s arms, he feared for her life; he wanted to protect her. Gabriel knew that his brother felt the same; even Dex and Eric by the way they worried about her well-being.

Gabriel headed towards the infirmary room, which was in the back of the house. Half way there, he realized that the Alpha was following him. He stepped aside and let the Alpha lead the way out of respect. Jacob nodded to him and continued on his way. It was hard to figure out what the Alpha was thinking about what he was going to do with her. Alpha Jacob always wanted to eliminate any danger to his pack. Gabriel knew that he perceived the girl as dangerous. She had rogues looking for her and she might know that they exist. If their existence was revealed to the human world, they would be all hunted and killed just because they weren’t fully human. Their kind learned long ago that humans would kill anything that they couldn’t understand or that might be more powerful than them. They might have supernatural strength, speed, and senses and could manipulate magic; but the humans had the strength in numbers.

When they reached the room, Jacob knocked on the door and Sarah told them to come in. When they entered, they saw the girl, or more like young lady laying down on the hospital bed. The blood was washed away and the bruises already fading. Jacob guessed that they used the healing remedy on her that heal bruises in a couple of hours. Now, they could see how she looked like. The young lady was about eighteen years old, with olive skin that was pale like she didn’t get much sun. She had a small nose, full beige lips and long eyelashes. Her eyes were closed showing that her eyelids were a couple of tones darker than her skin. She had stitches on her left cheek, right eyebrow and right side of her forehead. She had a fading horizontal scare across her lower throat, as if someone had slashed her throat a long time ago. She also had wolf bite marks across her shoulders and down her arms. The rest of her was covered with a white sheet until her knees, where the doctor was operating. She looked to be five feet seven inches tall. She looked unhealthy skinny, like she had been starved.

“What’s the diagnoses?” Jacob asked and Sarah sadly looked up at him after hanging Dr. Joshua a needle.

“She’s definitely human. She has six broken rips, a broken left leg and right wrist; we had to reset older breaks that didn’t heal correctly. She had internal bleeding and the rest of her is bruised. She also has a fractured skull and concession. I lost count on how many stitches she needed. We applied the healing medicine to heal her faster; otherwise it would take her months to recover. Some wounds are too deep and still need few more weeks to close up... She lost a lot of blood and needed blood transfusions and IV. Her toxicology report came back positive for a mixture of drugs. She would most likely go through detox throughout the week… She had been through a lot, the x-ray showed almost every bone in her body was broken at one point. And she has been starved too. And now she’s staring a fever, which is dangerous with her weak immune system. We sedated her because just breathing would be painful.” She stopped talking but Jacob sensed there was something she didn’t want to say.
