Chapter 13: Glimpses
"Do you sleep?" Malak asked looking across the pillow to see Nicolai's eyes wide open, spaced out. Malak had woken up few minutes earlier and watching Nicolai's still form. She felt that she had only closed her eyes for few moments but the light that steeped through the edges of the curtain indicated otherwise.
"Somewhat." Nicolai turned to Malak smiling before explaining further. "Jacob sleeps and I force our physical form into hibernate. Then I sleep when he wakes up and doesn't need me."
"Why?"
"We live a life easy enough to allow us to sleep at different times. Jake and I like to look out for the safety of the pack all day. So while he sleeps, I make sure everyone is safe on our land."
"Why do you sleep if your body rests during hibernation?" Malak wondered out loud.
"Sleep rests your mind like how you body needs rest." Nicolai explained. Nicolai started to feel Jacob gaining conscious.
"Maybe that's why I am so sick." Malak murmured to herself before sitting up and looking at the clock; which showed it was 9:15 in the morning.
"I slept five hours." Malak said in shock, it had been the longest amount of time she had slept in weeks without waking up muffling her screams.
"Let's try for six tonight." Nicolai said getting up and Malak followed.
"Is everyone awake already?" Malak wondered about if she had time to make breakfast for everyone or did they already leave.
"No, half of the house is still asleep." Nicolai checked quickly through the link. "So what's the plan for today?"
"Breakfast first?" Malak shrugged her shoulders.
"Ok, Jacob is waking up, maybe I will talk to you tonight?" Nicolai asked hopefully. He doesn't know why he carved her attention. He hadn't ever felt jealousy toward his human counterpart until he felt the need to directly interact with Malak. It wasn't enough anymore for him to just step back and watch his human interact with this mysterious creature."Sure, if you want." Malak told him while going into her closet to pick out her cloth of the day. Malak just stared at the hanger and shelves filled with cloth and felt out of place. She doesn't know how to put an outfit together. Before Jacob took her in, she never had choices even in cloth, she just wore what was given at her. She wished she had one of Leo's shirt right now, his faint scent always calmed her, helped her gain better control over her demons.
"Have a good day then." Nicolai brought her out of her thoughts. Nicolai noticed how she was staring at her wardrobe awkwardly.
"Sweet dreams." Malak said turning to door to give him a small wave. Nicolai swiftly leaned forward and kissed her forehead before giving Jacob control. Malak quickly stepped back looking at him in shock. She saw how his eyes dilated then returned to normal. She knew it was Jacob as his smile frowned in confusion as he noticed her shocked expression. Malak didn't know why he kept doing that, this was the second time he kissed her forehead. She suddenly got scared of Nicolai, fearing what he would eventually want from her.
"What did he do?" Jacob growled the second he recognized she was scared.
"Nothing, he just surprised me, that's all." Malak lied while turning back to her cloth and picking out a random pants and long sleeve shirt, avoiding eye contact with Jacob.
"You sure?" Jacob inquired.
"Yea, I need to get ready and got started on breakfast." Malak said fidgeting with her wrist brace.
"Ok, I will see at breakfast." Jacob took the hint and left the room.
