Chapter Two: Waiting
Two weeks had past and the girl they found was still unconscious. The day they found her, she almost died from the fever that reached 115 ºC. She even stopped breathing for a few minutes at one point. Dr. Joshua and Sarah did everything they could to keep her alive that day. They used ice bath, medication and healing herbs, trying everything to bring down the fever.
By noon that day, the flat line sound of the heart monitor resonated throughout the house. Eric, Dex, the Twin and Jacob ran out of their meeting to the infirmary room to see Dr. Joshua and Sarah trying to revive her with a defibrillator. Everyone watched in fear at the pale motionless girl for four minutes until they heard her heart beat again. Her light golden brown eyes opened briefly for a few seconds as she gasped for a breath. Then she went motionless except for the movement of her chest as she breathed. After that, the fever broke and she entered a coma for the rest of the two weeks. She was barely alive when she needed a ventilator to breath. Dr. Joshua kept saying that her body was too exhausted that it was too tired to stay alive. So the guys and Sarah kept a twenty-four hour watch to make sure someone was there if she woke up or if things turned to the worse.
During the past two weeks, Jacobs kept the guards on high alert and on the watch for the rogues’ return. However, there was no sighting of the vile creatures in the 200 miles radius. Jacob talked to the surrounding Alphas and made them aware of the rogue sighting but didn’t tell them about the person they found. He decided to keep her a secret until she wakes up. Even his pack didn’t know she was there except the guards, the pack warriors and the infirmary staff. Even though she was in a coma, her presence somehow still impacted everyone around her. The ones that had been in contact with her seemed to be drawn to her, constantly worried about her, filling her room with stuffed animals, balloons and flowers. It confused Jacob but he often found himself drawn to her bedside. Every night, he would toss and turn in restless sleep until he found himself sleeping in the armchair by her bed.
Jacob grew more wary of the girl every day. He even begin to wonder if she was a witch disguised as human. He had no other idea why else they would all be attracted to her in a way that made them feel so protective towards her. He was the alpha and had the responsibility to be cautious of the possible danger the girl could bring to his pack, which he considered as his family. He won’t find out the truth until his third-in-command, Jared, who is also a warlock comes back in few more weeks. Jared was away on a personal trip and Jacob had called him to request his immediate return. Jared had promised to return as soon as possible.
As Jacob waited, the idea of dropping her at a hospital step had crossed his mind a few times. He thought that it would be the best for her if she was cared for by her own kind. And if she knew about their supernatural existence, no one would believe her and just send her to mental institution. He thought that it wouldn’t be that bad. But he couldn’t give too much thought to that when every time the thought started to flow in his mind, Nicolai would growl viciously at him as he threaten to castrate him in his sleep. He knew how scary Nicolai could be, so he would quickly changed his thoughts to something else, like the pile of paperwork in front of him.

The girl thought she was dead. She had been floating, disconnected from her body for a long time. She didn’t know if it had been weeks, days, or minutes pasted since she felt her body be burned by the fever. She didn’t know where she was or what happened to her? The last thing she remembered was a man and woman hovering over her, trying to save her. She tried to tell them to stop touching her because they were making the pain worse but she couldn’t hear her own voice. She couldn’t open her eyes either. She screamed and screamed until her heart stopped, which was when everything else stopped for her.
