Kasey handed me my backpack, the straps were falling apart from the fall and some baguettes scattered the ground. She bent down and picked up the remaining pieces and handed them to me. I placed them into the bag and swung it over my shoulders.
"That was pretty awesome K" I stated and we both broke into laughter.
"Yeah, let's talk about that later" said Kasey "so, are you okay?" She glanced over at my leg and sighed. It was still dark out so we couldn't see everything.
"It looks pretty bad from where I'm standing" she said.
I chuckled, "Kase it's fine, we'll bandage it up when we get home". She walked closer to me and gave me a crooked smile. "Seriously Kase I'll be fine. So, did you get those jewels?" I changed the topic and after a few studders she dropped my leg and added on.
"Of course I did, and nobody even noticed."
"Are you mocking me?" I exclaimed "only a few people saw me take those loafs and to be fair, jewelry is ten times smaller than bread."
Then I started limping towards home and Kasey followed.*************************************
The streets were empty, everyone was inside getting the much needed rest for the next day. Jobs were hard and as the high council sat and governed us comfortably, our people worked as hard as they could for only a few pieces of gold a day. Our village held good hardworking people and sometimes I felt bad for stealing from them.
But family is what matters most.
We had walked for a while now, and we were much later than usual. Some of the baguettes fell from the bag that sat on my back and I reached down to pick them up. The bag was broken so I changed it with a smaller bag from inside. Kasey offered to carry it but I refused, we were almost home.
After a few minutes we stopped in front of a small worn out building that only held two apartments, which were more or less one room. Kasey lived on the first floor and I took refuge on the second.
I turned to her and grinned, "we're home!" I exclaimed whispering and she smiled. I took the two good bags off of my back and separated the cold bread in two. I handed her a bag along with some straw and placed mine back on my shoulders. "See you tomorrow then," I said enthusiastically, but she gave a worried expression. "What about your leg?" she said as she pointed down at the brown claud that began to form. "It will be fine Kase, I'll clean it up tonight and it will be brand new tomorrow." I smiled at her caring atmosphere and then turned around and started walking towards the staircase that led up to my apartment. I spoke as I reached the stairs, saying "bye" and waving at her rapidly. She returned my wave and I started up the stairs after she had disappeared through her front door.
When I reached my front door, I opened it slowly squinting at the loud screeching noise the it created. I closed our door once I was inside and jumped at the sudden face that popped up in front of me. "Fay! You're not supposed to wait up for me like that!" I exclaimed kneeling down to shorten down to her height.
She just smiled, clearly not caring about a word I said and exclaimed "Come on Cam we're sisters! I can't just sleep without knowing you were okay.." her young face stared down at the ground and she started to cry.
A soft cry that brought me close to her, and my arms wrapped her in a hug.
"I'm sorry Fay.. I was waiting for Kasey, and friends always stick together."
There was a short pause and then she added "and nobody gets left behind." She wiped her tears away and grinned at me, returning my hug.
"Promise you'll never do it again" she cried.
I let out a soft soothing chuckle and said with my voice low "of course Fay, I would never leave my amazing sister."
We stood up and laughed, her bubbly personality returned and after she let out a big sigh.
I smiled at her and asked "so, where's mum and dad? Are they sleeping?" She laughed in my face and then walked over to the corner of the room where the small light of a candle suddenly became lit. Two faces appeared in the dim light and I started to lecture my parents who looked more awake than Fay. "Mum, dad! I told you guys not to wait up for me!" I put on a sour face and continued "I said I will be fine, I will always be fine."
They just chuckled at me and sighed, "Cameron, we will never go to sleep when you aren't home," my father said with his calm, sweet voice. I could never stay mad at them for long, I loved their presence and I loved them. "We love you and we get worried, we are parents after all and our family must stay strong," my mother added and suddenly made me break with a small smile.
I knew they loved me and I loved them.
I love my family, I would never leave my family.
I walked up to them smiling because I had the best possible treasure life could offer.
I sat down and took off my makeshift backpack.
As I set it on the floor I questioned, "so, do you want to eat now or in the morning?"
They all agreed to keep for the next day.
I agreed and then told them to go to sleep.
I took of my sweater, revealing a pale beige tank top that I had tucked into my pants. I then walked over to my corner of our room where I stored all of my clothes, materials, and greatest treasures. I stripped down to my undergarments and started to put on a fresh pair of pants when a shot of pain jolted up my left leg. I grunted and then quickly shot my head back towards where my family were sleeping. They twitched and moved around but then returned back to a still state in their slumber.
I returned my focus to my leg and put a candle on the floor beside me. I used a match to light it and then moved a little to the right to grab some other supplies. I reached over and grabbed a little container labeled <quick relief and healing.> The high council didn't give us much for our labour but they do keep us more or less healthy and re-supplied our medicines to our desired amount, if we have the money to pay.
I then reached over and grabbed a bucket of water along with some cloth that we made from old, destroyed clothes.
My leg had formed a claud and thankfully it wasn't too extreme.
My face was scratched up as well and my arm had a small cut. I didn't want to waste medicine, but an infection would create a much bigger problem.I took the cloth and dipped it into day old water from a small lake Kasey and I found nearby. I quickly cleaned up all of my cuts and scratches, careful not to make any possible noises that could wake up my family.
When they were clean, I applied the medicine on my leg and arm and left the minor scratches to be. It stung and I winced, but I made no noise loud enough to wake even little Fay.
Finally I bandaged up my leg and my arm, and moved on to choosing some new clothes for the next morning.
I always wore new clothes to bed, if I had changed at all, so I could get up and go in the morning.
I wore some warm light grey jogging pants that broke the winds that Nebraska gave willingly. I also put on a worn out white t-shirt that was more of a grey than a white. I put on some socks that held holes and a navy blue hoodie that couldn't look any older.
Although it wasn't much, I was fortunate for what I had. While I had two outfits in my wardrobe, Kasey only had one.
Not to mention that the parts of my socks that didn't have holes on them, kept my feet warm and comfortable. Finally I stood up and already felt a difference in my injuries. My leg felt snug in the bandage as I tip toed back over to my family.
I laid down beside Fay and shared the one blanket that we placed on the ground for extra support. Honestly it didn't get rid of the ache we felt after waking up from a long night on a hard wooden surface, but the fact that we owned a blanket made us feel more at ease and safe when we went to sleep.
I turned over on my side and closed my eyes.
My expectations for morning was a healed leg and a full tummy.▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️
