Within the shadows

I woke up really early today. The sun was still hiding beneath the horizon and the stars and moon still shone brightly in the sky. I was scared of what might come in the morning. When the sun came up I didn't want to be at home, I didn't want my location to be known.
I had a bad feeling about today, were they going to come back?

I couldn't sleep anymore, even though my village was still asleep I couldn't stay in bed.
I decided to start my day.
It was like I was the only person in the world, nobody was awake. All the lights were turned off and even the wind was silent.
I slowly sat up and stretched to my fullest. Feeling refreshed I tiptoed over to the window and stared out at our village. I placed my elbows on the window sill and closed my eyes as a soft breeze tickled my face.
Everything was silent. So silent that I could clearly hear the beat of my heart.
It was peaceful, just me and the world. But like everything, good things only happen for a little while, until everything goes to chaos.

A soft noise echoed through the quiet streets.
Footsteps. I heard footsteps.

I opened my eyes and listened hard.
I knew I had heard footsteps, but nobody was awake at this time, not even the guards.
"What?" I whispered to myself.

I took a deep breath and quietly backed away for the door. I needed to know who those footsteps were from.
I tiptoed towards my corner of the room and grabbed my knifes, my belt and one loaf of bread.
I reached for my make shift backpack but noticed that it was too broken to be handy.
I needed a real backpack.
"Might as well get two packs for Kasey and I when nobody's awake to notice." I said to myself and smirked.
After I had packed up and was ready to go, I scurried over to my back window and slid down the bricks all the way to the ground.

I stopped for a moment when I heard the footsteps again, and as soon as I heard it it was gone.
I drew my attention back to myself and quickly made my way to the empty road in front of my house. I looked right and left, as if I was checking for cars. Then I sped up the street carefully picking up my feet and making no sound.
I listened intently for the sound of footsteps  but they seemed to have disappeared.
Who would be up at the break of dawn?

As I ran I reminded myself, "backpacks I need backpacks," and I made my way to the nearest supply store.
When I got there the sun had just started to rise and I gazed at it enchantingly. The sky was orange and pink, but the stars still shone through,  it would still be a while until daytime.
I spotted the backpacks through the window of the store. There was no glass to prevent me from entering, so I slipped through the window seamlessly. The inside of the store was rough. It was small and made completely out of concrete. The decorations were limited and the only eye candy was the one small red carpet at the door.
The store was filled with necessities, and as I looked around I decided that I might need more then just a couple backpacks.

I quickly grazed the room.
There was camping essentials like blankets, lamps, coal, wood, and tents. Also some knives, fruit and matches.

Finally I made my way towards the backpacks.  I picked up some things on my way to them like, blankets, matches and a small golden coloured lamp.
Right beside the backpacks were dozens of apples and plums. I chose two backpacks for Kasey and I and started to fill them with goodies.
For myself I picked out a simple big black hiking backpack and I chose a beige hiking backpack with many zippers for Kasey.
I smiled as I packed them all up, we would be fully supplied for long.

Before I left I got two more things, a big warm sweater for the both of us and some new shoes and socks.
"No more holes Kasey" I whispered as I pack them up.
I zipped up both of them and threw my backpacks straps over my shoulders. I held Kasey's tightly in my hands and walked towards the window. I cautiously peeked out into the world and looked around until I thought it was clear. I then pushed myself though the window, struggling, but happy and grateful for the new weight that I held.
