Walking into Omaha was magnificent. The atmosphere was welcoming and its newfound eye candy crowded my eyes. I imagined living here for the rest of my life. Getting a job and an apartment, enjoying the comfort of the future.
They would appreciate my work, I could hunt, garden, fight and I was an expert at survival skills.
But they seemed to be on their feet.
They had more then I could ever dream of. One person in this city had as much money as my entire village's savings.
I envied their life and their things, the things that I could never have.Grayson and Davis walked slowly in front of me. They had walked a long way as well, and their legs were tired. The amazing sights helped me forget about the pain in my feet, but now that we were where we meant to be, the pain returned.
I picked my feet high above the ground with every step, stretching and soothing my tight muscles.
"What's your mothers name?" I asked Grayson, knowing that the answer Davis would give would most likely be ignorant.
Grayson kept his eyes forward while walking towards the streets of his city and answered, "Lily, but you should call her mrs. Rivera." His voice was deep and commanding and he continued to look forwards.
I raised an eyebrow and scrunched my nose, how could he think so shallow of me? Did he not think I would show respect?
Quickly I added, "of course." and walked on without regrets. He just responded with a slight nod and showed me the way, "we just have to cross through there to get to my house." He voiced.
I was surprised about how close it was. He accurately pointed towards a wide ally way between two shiny metal buildings. They shone in the moonlight and I was reflected onto the thick silver sheets. I looked run down and dirty, my face was covered in mud and my tan skin shone from the dew of the water. My hands held sprinkles of blood. I didn't notice it until now, but blood would not be perceived as safe when I walked into a strangers home.
I rubbed it off quickly with my opposite hand and wiped the access on my backpack.
We passed by the buildings and headed into the dark alley. The ground was made of pavement and the grey colour seemed darker in the shadows. It looked as though it had been cracking for years. There were many cracks that held small rocks and bugs. Each crack was big enough to support a home for little rodents to hide.
The way was short so we quickly sprouted into a skinnier street than the last, but this street was alive.
There were empty and full merchant stands lined up along both sides of the road. Some held fruits and others held jewelry and clothes.
There were power lines that sprayed out light onto the street and the ground had turned into bigger portions of intertwined rock. The ground was made of many coloured rocks, blacks, reds, blues, it was the most beautiful street I had ever seen.Grayson led us over to a small two story townhouse with dirty yellow bricks that made up the walls. "We're here" he said turning around to see if we were still near. He then headed up the few concrete stairs they had, and opened their decorative black door,
motioning for me to step through.
I created a half smile with the last bit of energy I had left and then slowly walked up the stairs behind Davis. "We're going to see what mama says about my arm," Davis snickered at me and I stared him down. "You better not say anything about me, you hear?" I said with anger but also a carefully hidden plead.
Davis just rolled his eyes at me and continued to enter his home. I ran up behind him and grabbed him by his good arm. He jolted back and I let go, but I kept my stance,
"DO NOT." I commanded.Davis rolled his eyes at me again and turned around slowly before stepping into his house. I followed shortly after but not before I heard a whisper, "Grayson, why does she have to stay with us?" Davis questioned,
"she's from Rasemore.. we have to take her in."
I was confused but I put away any worried look and stepped into his home. "You didn't have to let me stay" I said to Grayson but he just smiled, throwing away everything he had said to Davis, "well, you didn't have a place to stay. I would feel terrible if you stayed outside alone."
I laughed and filled him in, "I didn't have much of a house back in Raesmore. The streets would be my new favourite place."
He chuckled and motioned for me to go in. The door closed with a quiet slam and all the noise from outside vanished. I looked around taking in the new atmosphere.
The walls were all a dusty grey colour and the ground was all wood. Each and every dark plank underneath me creaked with every step. The house was dim. Only candles lit the space and their heat rose towards me when I passed them. The house was huge on the inside, much bigger than anything back in Raesmore. The detailing on the walls was ancient but each and every carved piece mesmerized me.
After a while Grayson's voice echoed behind me, its presence spreading throughout his house. "Mama! We have a guest."
I looked around waiting for her response, but the house stood cold and still. I looked back at Grayson. He wore a worried expression and motioned for Davis to stand beside him.
"Mama, are you here!" He continued and Davis added on, "Mama!"
They looked at each other and then Davis headed to the door.
"Is something wrong?" I asked.
"No everything's fine. Mama just isn't here, that's all." He grinned at me and continued, "she probably went out to look for us, we're much later than we usually are."
Usually are? How many times did he come to my village.
"Oh." I said cheerfully, trying to change the mood, then I offered "I can come with you then, she couldn't have gone far."
"No" Davis replied, "you don't know what you're looking for, you've never seen her before."
"Then describe her to me," I replied. How incapable did he think I was. I was going to show him who I really am one day.
He stuttered at my comment, starting to speak but then cut himself off. "You don't need to know. You've helped enough," The sarcasm in his voice pierced me. I was coming. Didn't matter what he said.
"What about your arm" I asked smirking, and he just rolled his eyes and walked out the door. A sharp slam travelled through my eardrums and I winced. Grayson laughed at me and said "Old married couple" before turning around to leave. "You think that funny eh?!" I exclaimed and then ran up behind him kicking him in the legs. He fell to the ground with a loud thump, but quickly stood up and regained his posture "Hey!" He declared, but I just smiled at his ungainly state.
"We are NOT an old married couple you hear?" I concluded with the twitch of my lip.
"Yeah alright." He said and then turned to leave, "there's food in the fridge by the way, you must be hungry from the walk." he said before exiting through the door. I then raised an eyebrow at the empty room and yelled out to him, "WHATS A FRIDGE!" for a possible untimely response, but there was none. I ran over to the huge window at the front of his house and looked through the thick glass pane. Grayson and Davis walked side by side, until finally running towards the same alleyway we arrived from. After they were out of sight I bolted over to the door and opened it quickly. I shut it behind me and then dashed into the packed street. Running past people upon people that I had never seen before was refreshing. It reminded me that there was more to the world than I would have ever thought was not.
I curved, as I quickly changed direction and then ran towards the alley way.
I zoomed through it and stopped with a puff of dust flowing through the air. I had yet to step out of the alleyway, but instead I looked past the wall, careful not to be seen and I quickly spotted Grayson and Davis.
They were still running in search for their mom, and I wouldn't stay alone. So as soon as I saw them I pushed past the metal walls of the building and bolted towards them softly but swiftly.
They were headed back to where we had arrived by boat. The small beach where our boat had stopped on the shore.
They must've thought their mom went back there to look for them, clever.
I blinked quickly as the cool wind hammered onto my face, and as I approached the shore, I shortened my pace. They had walked down the hill that lead down to the water already so I decided to reveal myself. How stupid were they, to think I would stay in that house?
