Chapter 9: Jay's Story
I couldn't help it. I started to cry. Jay and I both knew what the message meant. Neither of us had to say it.
I had already kind of suspected that the fire was some kind of attack. But now I know for sure. I also know that there will be more.
Jay put his arms around me and pulled my body into his. He was strong and in any other circumstance I would be very happy that he was holding me like this. But not after the news that I just received.
"Bethany?" Jay said.
"Yeah?"
"I figure I might as well have someone know my story if we're all gonna die in the end anyway."
"Your story?"
"My past, my fear, my story."
"Oh. Yeah, Go ahead." I said, curious of what he would tell me.
"When I was 7, there was a house fire. I was in the house with my parents when it happened. I still don't know how it started. It was horrifying. I was burned severely on my back and my leg. My parents died. Ever since then, I've been terrified of fire. That's why I didn't immediately go in to save Anna. I was scared."
"Jay, I'm so sorry. Wow,I had no idea." I choked.
I never knew that Jay went through this. I never knew he was an orphan. I guess there were a lot of things I didn't know about him.
"How bad were you hurt?" I asked, trying to fill the silence.
Jay stood up and took his shirt off.
I saw burn scars all up and down his back.
"Second degree burns on my back and first degree on my right leg."
I got up and ran my fingers across his red, blistered skin.
I noticed a small tattoo on the back of his neck. A circle with "Cassy & Brendan" written in beautiful cursive inside.
"Are these your parents names?" I ask, touching the circle.
"Yes." He says.
Jay then turned around and looked me in the eyes. He asked me something that I had never thought he'd ever ask me.
"Can I kiss you?"
I managed to get myself to speak. "Yes."
And it was the best first kiss anyone could ever hope for.
