Old Lady wen back inside. As she went the girls followed her. Was this the last time I would see this wretched place?

"Let me help you with your bags, Attie," Miss Lorensen said looking around for my baggage.

"Um... I haven't got any bags Miss," I told her. It was true. I only had three outfits. My pajamas, my everyday clothes, and the clothes I was wearing. I didn't need any of it.

"Oh well then we'll have to go shopping!" Miss Lorensen said happily. Shopping? I'd never been shopping in my life. But I'd watch TV of girls my age going to places called malls. It looked fun.

Miss Lorensen opened her car for me and I stepped inside, thanking her. She got into the driver's seat and pulled her seat belt over her chest and clipped it into a buckle. It made a click sound. I'd never really used one before.

"Buckle up!" Miss Lorensen said starting up the car.

I tried it for the first time. I pulled the belt over my chest and pushed it into the buckle. It clicked and I let go. It stayed put.

She started driving along the empty road. I'd never been in a car either. It was a bumpy ride. Small rocks blew into my face because the car had no roof.

I think I fell asleep because the next thing I remember is we were still driving. The clouds were growing dark. It looked like it was going to rain.

"It looks like rain," Miss Lorensen said, "Go ahead and push that button over the mirror."

I pushed the button and suddenly the rood slowly pulled over the car. It's awesome! I guess she sensed my amazement because she said, "Cool, ain't it?" I nodded.

I think a few more hours past and I had fallen asleep again. Now it was raining and I finally asked her a questions I'd been wondering since she signed the papers.

"Why me? W-Why adopt me?"

Miss Lorensen kept her eyes on the road and it looked like she was staring into the distance, thinking.

"Attie. I didn't want a cute little girl. I wanted someone special. Like you."

She didn't look at me. Her words completely threw me off. Me? Special? Those words don't go in the same sentence. I didn't want to ask anymore questions. I was too tired.

I dazed off back to sleep.
