Part 3- The Game

I stand in front of the full length mirror, deciding on if I want to change anything about myself before Riley shows up. Everything seemed fine to me; I was wearing a black blouse with a long sleeve undershirt, my kelly green skinny jeans to represent school colors, and my black flats. I had straightened my hair right after I got home from school, and applied my make up with the green glitter eyeshadow my mom had gotten me for my birthday last year. She was an obsessed lunatic when it came to cosmetics. Of course with her ADD, I would have to drag her out of an Ulta store when I was younger. Now she just orders everything online.

"Honk!" I hear outside my window. I do a quick once-over of myself before my phone begins to buzz. It's the she-devil herself. I grab my silver purse and answer the phone before turning off my light and shutting my bedroom door.

"I'm coming!" I say before quickly hanging up.

"Bye mom, bye dad! I'm going to the game with Riley!" I shut the front door before they can ask who Riley is or interrogate me about anything.

"Hey hey!" Riley says cheerfully as I open the door to her tan GMC pickup. I look around at my surroundings, and that's when I see it. A picture of Forest, sitting on her dashboard. They've only been together for 3 weeks and they're already putting each other's pictures in their vehicles? Oh dear Lord, please tell me that when I get an actual boyfriend, I won't be that eager or excited enough to put his picture in my truck.

"Hey!" I try to mimic her tone. I look over at her outfit; she wore a white lace blouse with jeans and cowboy boots. "You look nice." I try to make conversation and push away the awkward silence in between me and my former friend/enemy.

"Oh thanks!" She says as she pulls out and onto the street. "Yeah, Forest picked out this shirt when we went shopping together last weekend."

So they were already picking out each others clothes? Aren't you supposed to take relationships slowly when you get into high school? At the rate they're going, they'll be either married or over with by Christmas.

Actually no, they'll be over before Christmas, because you're only giving Zack a month, remember?

Oh yeah, we did say a month.

"So how are things with Zack? I mean, y'all look so cute together! Well, not as cute and me and Forest, but y'all look good together."

And there was the Riley I just couldn't stand: the one who thought she was the shit.

"Me and Zack are great! Thank you for asking," I say as happy as possible, and just showing common courtesy, I ask, "how are you and Forest?"

"Oh we're just PERFECT! He's so sweet to me and oh my gosh, you'll never guess what he told me last night while we were watching movies?!" She's all but screaming by the time we get to the school parking lot across from the football field. It was almost 7, so we had to hurry and take our seats so we wouldn't have to stop in our tracks for the national anthem and the prayer, because both were important here in the South, and if you weren't settled in, then people were shooting death glances your way.

"What did he tell you?" I ask as we make our way to the admissions gate. Boy did I regret ever asking how her love life was going.

"He said...he said he loves me. ISN'T THAT GREAT?!" She jumps up and down as if she's won the lottery. Well, my job just got a lot harder.

We take our seats just before the president of our student council says a prayer. The 3 things you appreciated most around here was probably God, trucks, and most importantly...football. All southerners and "southern bells" LOVED football. It was a way of life down here.

"Amen." Everyone says. Our marching band plays Star Spangled Banner, and soon enough we're kicking off to the opposing team. It was going to be one hell of a game tonight, because we were playing our rivals: the Dustin Hawks.

The game goes on for a while, and Riley and I talk amongst ourselves while keeping our attention on the game. We were down by one touchdown, but the football boys were still pumped. Riley started talking about how difficult her sister was being when Zack caught an interception and ran it back to the 46 yard line. We stood up and cheered with the rest of the fans, but I couldn't help but notice the twinkle in Riley's eye.

"Hey I'm going to the concession stand," I say to Riley about 5 minutes into 2nd quarter, "do you want anything?"

"No, thank you. I'll grab me something maybe halfway through halftime." She says. Not wanting to argue with her, I grab my phone and wallet out of my purse and go towards the concessions. "Well, if you need anything, I have my phone on me." I call out before leaving her side completely. Normally girls have to do everything together; go to the bathroom and concessions stands, sometimes even eat the same food or order the same drink. I wasn't like that, and I never understood what the big deal was. I always thought of myself as an independent person and I could do things on my own. Part of that might be because Scarlet always had to have the exact same as me when we were in 5th grade, and she still is like that. That's why I always avoid her for the fear of my own identity being taken away from me. Plus she just had that way with people; she manipulated them into feeling bad for her so she could get what she wanted. Then she'd start lying to you and try to prove her innocence when you made "assumptions" about her. If there was anyone I didn't like more than Riley, it was Scarlet.

"And that's the game everyone! the Silverton Mustangs have won the rivalry game against the Dustin Hawks with a score of 56-48. See y'all next week as the stampede travels to Greensville to take on the bears! God bless y'all and have a nice night!" Our principal finishes his final statement over the intercom as the boys are in their little football huddle. They break out and make their way to the locker rooms. I watch them jog off the field before Riley grabs my attention.

"Are you going to Big Momma's Burgers with me? Ya know she has that $2 meal deal every time the boys win a game. And I heard since they won the big rivalry game, she was giving away free smoothies and milkshakes to anyone who shows up."

"Sure! I'll just have to text my mom and let her know what I'm up to and that I'll be late coming home." I say, pulling my phone out of my back pocket. Big Momma's Burgers was Caden's mom's restaurant. And who could pass up one of her banana-strawberry smoothies? They were the best in the whole county!

My phone buzzes just as I pull up my mothers name. Taking a glance at the message before continuing on, I see it's from Zack. After telling my mom I was going to Big Momma's and that I would be home around 11:30 or 12, I change to Zack's message and read.

Him: U look beautiful tonight babe. C U at Big Mommas.

Me: How'd you know I was going to Big Momma's?

It takes a quick second, but my phone vibrates in my hand as I'm climbing into Riley's truck.

Him: Cuz I said so. (; lol jk. But we have to do something, right?

Me: Yeah I guess. See you in a few.

Reflecting all the action of the game as we drive through town, I can't help but think of what Zack's text meant when he said we have to do something. What does "something" even mean? Hopefully he means just picking on each other and holding hands to say the most. I don't know if I'm ready for him to kiss me or anything like that. Then again, if you think about it, a month isn't that long. But it is only the second day of our "relationship". Hopefully he won't push it. We needed for Forest and Riley to break up ASAP, but does that mean Zack sticking his tongue down my throat only 2 days into our mission? Because if that's what it means, I'm aborting the mission and abandoning ship.

A.N.- Hey everyone. I'm not sure if this chapter went to any particular use in the story. But I promise the next part will be MUCH more entertaining than this. I think you'll like it.
