Usually, corn fields were quite calm places, the only sounds being the wind rustling through the crops, excepting the few occasions when the corn was being harvested. At this point in time, however, it was not a combine harvester disturbing the peace but three human beings and a Time Lord seemingly attempting a road rally in a small red car.
"Okay, left. Sharp turn!" Amy exclaimed, reading the directions via tulip symbols. Rory made the turn, throwing them about inside the car. "Okay, right. No, no, no, I mean left. No, sorry, right, right, I definitely meant right. Now loop the loop. And stop! Stop!"
Rory slammed on the brakes, making them come to a halt in front of the TARDIS in the middle of the crop circle. The Doctor stepped out, brandishing a copy of the Leadworth Chronicle at them as they got out of the car. "Seriously?" The front page displayed an article on Leadworth's Crop Circle, showing a picture of the word Doctor in the field. McKenzie followed him out, smiling at the feel of the sun and the breeze on her skin.
Zoë shrugged. "You never answer your phone."
"Okay, you've had all summer," Amy said eagerly. "Have you found her? Have you found Melody?"
The Doctor hesitated. "Permission?"
"Granted," Rory agreed. The Doctor threw the newspaper over his shoulder before hugging Amy.
"You know who she grows up to be, so you know we will find her," McKenzie pointed out, skillfully ducking below the paper before feeling for Amy's hand to squeeze it.
"But you haven't yet." Amy deflated.
"Hang on," Pietro frowned, retrieving the paper to read the headline. "What's this bit?" He pointed to a line going through the word Doctor in the field, shown on the front page of the newspaper. "That was not us."
Another engine started up and they all screamed, diving for safety as they were nearly run over by a young woman in an expensive car. She raised her eyebrows, getting out. "You said they were funny. You never said they were hot."
"Mels!" Rory complained.
"What are you doing here?" Amy demanded.
Mels rolled her eyes. "Following you. What do you think?"
"Er, where did you get the car?" Rory asked.
"It's mine." Mels shrugged, then smirked as police sirens started up in the distance. "Ish."
"Oh, Mels, not again," Amy groaned.
"You can't keep doing this," Rory insisted. "You're going to end up in prison."
"Sorry," McKenzie apologised, accepting her husband's help in getting to her feet. "Hello. I'm not following this. I'm very lost." She made a face. "How did you forget to mention that we're hot?!"
"Is that the phone box?" Mels asked, eyeing the TARDIS. "The bigger on the inside phone box? Oh, time travel. That's just brilliant." She noticed the Doctor watching her weirdly. "Yeah, I've heard a lot about you. I'm their best mate."
The Doctor frowned. "Then why don't I know you? I danced with everyone at the wedding. The women were all brilliant. The men were a bit shy."
"I don't do weddings," Mel explained. She sighed as the sirens got closer. "And that's me out of time." She pulled a gun on the nearest person, who just so happened to be McKenzie.
"Oi!" Zoë exclaimed, phasing her mother as the Doctor threw up a forcefield, Pietro tensing.
"Mels!" Amy tried.
"For God's sake!" Rory complained.
"Mmm, the sweet, sweet smell of death threats," McKenzie rolled her eyes, fully aware of what was happening.
