Alderaan

I'm kneeling on the floor watching R5 pull up an image of the Death Star. Cass sits behind me, also watching intently. We're hurtling through the galaxy at lightspeed, and these plans are the only thing that matters to me.

"Your father put a flaw in this thing," Cass says.

"He did."

"Where exactly?"

"I don't know. But it leads to the main reactor, so my first guess would be to search around there."

"R5, show us the main reactor."

R5 zooms into the center of the battle station, to a round core inside the Death Star.

"So that's the main reactor, but where is the flaw that leads to it?" I am becoming very impatient.

"I think it would be best if we lay off  and let a droid find it. Humans, I think, are not enough to find something like this.

"Yes, yes, you're right. R5, you can shut it down for now." I get up from the floor as the Hologram disappears. I turn to Cass.

"Can we have a normal conversation and get to know each other better?"

"Alright. What do you want to know?"

"You've been with the Rebellion since you were six?"

"Yes."

"And how old are you now?"

"Twenty-Six."

I give a low whistle. "Twenty years!"

"Yes. It's a very long time, isn't it?"

"It's a very long time! You've been here since the beginning?"

"Yes."

"What's your favorite planet that you've been to?"

"Alderaan is amazing."

"Really? Isn't that where the princess is from?"

"Yes, Princess Leia Organa. But hush. She's not affiliated with the Rebellion, as far as the records say.

"What's Alderaan like?"

"It's full of green forests and white capped mountains and beautiful oceans, it's the most beautiful place in the galaxy. They build their buildings while respecting the landscape; the architecture blends into nature. I'll take you there, someday."

"Really?"

"Really. When all of this is over. You're coming with me to Alderaan."

I close my eyes and picture lush greenery beneath a snowy mountain range. I picture oceans full of life and wonder. I can almost smell the salt spray of the waves lapping at the shore.

"I'd like that. Very much."

I look at Cass. He's looking away, with a little smile on his face, probably remembering an experience he had there.

Why is he being so nice to me, promising to take me to Alderaan, when three, four days ago, he wouldn't trust me with a blaster?

I mean, he eventually did, but not before he tried to take it off me and giving up.

We swoop down on Yavin 4 as I stare out the window, looking out at the trees. This mission went by too quickly. It was too easy. There must be something more...

Cass lands us outside the Hangar and we step off the ship. Some pilot cleaning their astromech sees us, and runs over. "You're to report to Mon Mothma and the General as soon as you land."

"Thank you," I turn to R5. "R5! Time to go."

We walk to the Command Center, R5 on my Left, Cass on my right.

Mon Mothma looks up as we walk in.

"Jyn, Cassian. You're back already?"

"Yes, ma'am," Cass replies politely as always.

"It went well then?"

"Too well, I'm suspecting," I say. "I have a funny feeling that there's more we have to do."

"There is," General Draven looks at me gravely. "Princess Organa has been captured and is being held on the Death Star. I believe you two would be best for the role."

I grimace. They want us for anything Death Star-related. but...

"I'll do it," I say through gritted teeth.

"So will I," says Cass.

Mon Mothma smiles wanly. "The Death Star, according to our systems, is heading towards Alderaan. Hurry. You know what to do."

My eyes widen. I grab Cass and wave at R5. Alderaan. "Come on! Let's go!"

We run out of the hangar and jump into our ship. Not Alderaan, please not Alderaan, not when I've just been promised that I can go there and see all the sights! The ramp lifts and seals shut, with R5 beeping at us to hurry, hurry, hurry. R5 makes the calculations for Hyperspace as Cass turns on the engines and get us up into the air.

"Plug in the calculations, R5! Quickly!" Cass yells.

R5 beeps and whistles as he hurriedly extends a stick and puts it into a hole in the wall. Cass reaches up and pushes the lever slowly, watching the stars turn into streaks, then storm clouds again.

An anxious twenty minutes later, we finally come out of Hyperspace, just in time-

-To see a green laser beam plunge into the planet and exploding into little bits of rubble in the cold, silence of space.

I feel tears rising in my eyes.

We're too late.
