"Sarah"

"Sarah?" I pride my eyes open, forcing them to face the light. Above me was a blurry face of someone. She was older, same age as my mother. Dark hair, easily mistaken for black, eyes that matched the same. She resembled a look very close to mine. Then I realized that she didn't look like me, I looked like her.

"Mom?" My mouth was dry creating a raspy sound to come out.

"Shh... my child save your energy. I come to you in spirit, I wanted to see what you looked like." I could feel a ghost like hand come up and touch my cheeks. "You almost messed with the laws of nature. Your lucky your friend wasn't dead yet." She sighed and I thought that would be a great time to break in.

"How do I get them to come with me?" I looked away, trying to see if where I was, but everything past her face was black. I was in a dream state. Half awake, half a sleep.

"Dunstan will follow you, he is loyal." She paused looking at my eyes, knowing what I she meant. "Nevada...in time she will come over. She loves you like a sister, and that bond with make her feel like she must come with you." She looked up at the endless darkness, she let a few tears fall. "Deven is a man of knowledge, it's all he has. He wont break form it. You have to show him and teach him how to let go." He gripped my hand, squeezing it. "No matter how much you don't want to hear this. I don't think it's best for them to come. It's not their journey... you were meant to be great, they weren't."

I looked into her eyes, assessing what she was trying to say. "You don't think they will survive there." When she forced her eyes away from mine, I got my answer. "I can do it... but like you need dad, I need them. They keep me sane... no matter how hard they can be." She smiled, looking up again.

"Your father would be so proud of you." She let a few more tears drop from her eyes. They trickled down her face, falling down to more darkness. "I told him I was coming to see you." She looked down at me, squeezing my hand again. "You're not a lone. Bring them I will keep watch over you. I must go now someone is coming to talk to you."

With that her weak grip of my hand slipped away into the abyss. I couldn't open my eyes, but yet could hear everything around me. Someone had come in, brought a chair to the edge of my bed. They sat down, it wasn't Nevada she wouldn't come and see me after what I did. Dunstan would have taken my hand or something.

"Thank you." It was a gentle voice one that was familiar. I could smell the fields coming from her clothes. It was Deven's mother. Why was here? Didn't she blame me for everything? What changed? I heard her sigh long and low. "He made it. The doctor was talking to us when Dunstan come down to get help. We all rushed down the hall. Saw you on the ground, your nose was bleeding. But Deven was awake, coughing, well choking as Nevada was hugging him a little to tight." She took my hand, as my mother had done. "I know you wont remember any of this, but when I saw you there I knew you guys had done something. I didn't know when but I don't care, you brought my boy back. Thank you." With that her hand left mine and she walked out. Quietly closing the door after her self.

She was a woman of few words, in fact I think those were the most world she had ever spoken to me. I remembered back when I would walk to school with Deven. I came into their house, it was small like everyone's', but once inside it looked like a normal house in a decent neighborhood. Deven was coming down the stairs as his mother mover to stand on top of them. She was in her white dirty robe, covering her t-shirt and shorts. She looked at me and then back over to her son.

"Deven you cleaned your room right?" She sounded annoying at the time, but she was very motherly over them.

"Yes mom." Deven was angered, rolling his eyes as he started to walk out. I looked up at her, she had a sad smile on her face. Trying to make it look like she was happy. I always thought that she wished she could have done more for her family. I new she tried to gather multiple jobs, but it always wore her out.

Deven told her to stop that he didn't care where he went. Telling her that it was his home here, everyone he loved was here. That starting over was nothing he had ever wanted.

My memory stopped as the door opened. Deven was standing in the door way looking out at me. I felt like he was miles apart. He was a bit paler than normal, but didn't look close to death at all. His auburn hair was a mess as usually. He never cared how he looked, he always made up for it in brains. He had a fresh change of clothes on. His glasses had a crack running threw them.

When he saw me looking at them he took them off and walked over to me. All the while saying, "Don't suppose you could fix these too." He let out a small laugh. It was a numb one, no emotions nothing. He sat down in the chair that his mother brought closer. I looked at him assessing every move he made, how his eye scanned the room. "My mother said that it was a miracle that I lived. Said the arrow went straight threw my heart. Dunstan told me what happened, Nevada confirmed everything. I wanted to hear form you." He took a long pause, playing with his fingers and sighing at the same time. "So... What happened?"

I looked at him, he was all healed. Nothing wrong with him. No after affects. It worked everything worked, I could tell there many things running threw his head. Depending on what I said now, determined what he was going to say next. I chose my words carefully.

"Dunstan told me he wanted me to come with him. I followed, having not know what was happening. We passed your parents who were sitting crying." She paused as she saw him flinch a little at that thought. "I told Dunstan to tell me where he was taking me, he brought me into a closet. Told me you were dying." I closed my eyes as a few tears came out, I still hurt the thought. "I fell to my knees. It was like a fourth of my heart was taken away from me. He told me that only I could help you. Told me I had to save you." I looked down at my hands, moving them into the air to inspect them. "I did was I thought was best. I did, Nevada came in. She wasn't told that you were dying." I paused looking at him in the eyes, hoping he understood why she couldn't know. He nodding understanding what was going threw her head. "Batta bing batta boom. I had saved you, but I was slipping away and then I passed out."

He was sitting in chair taking everything in. He was so calm it was staring to scare me. Then he got out of his chair walking over to stare out the window. The lights were off, only the window was letting the sun brighten up the space.

"You could have killed me." His voice was low, scary calm.

"You were already going to die." My voice broke as the words left my mouth. "I couldn't let you, not if it was my fault. You're to valuable to this world to die."

"You broke the laws of nature my bringing me back. There are going to be consequences. They are going to come after us, something bad is going to happen." He turned around. Walking closer to me. He leaned over so that either hands were on the bed. "Am I valuable to this world. Or am I valuable to you to help you save yours?" The words hissed off his mouth. Hurting me as I tried not to let it show. He moved back over to the window.

There was a moment of silence. Then I opened my mouth. "You are valuable in everything you do. I saved you because your one of the few things that I have in my life. One of the few who understands me. You are the only one who cares to challenge me further. You make me think. I had to save you, I wasn't your time yet." As the last part rolled off my tough I wish I could have taken it back. As he took them and shot them back at me.

"Who are you to decide when it is my time?" He voice was getting louder. He was no longer the small nerdy boy, he was darker.

"I know I'm not I didn't mean to say that." I paused and then decided to try something new. "Do you ever look in the mirror and wish you were something more?" With no answer I continued so the silence wouldn't kill me. "I do. But you don't. You like it here, everything you have is here. I remember when you told you mom, that this was your home. Everything is here, your parents, your sister, Nevada." That hit a string as he turned around. "I saved you because that's what I do. That's what I will continue to do until I die." I could feel him start to smile. "You're either in or you not."

I followed him as he walked over to the door. Taking the handle in his hands and turning it. But no opening the door he turned in head just a little. I could see he eye fixed on the door handle, his jaw tighten. His nose outlined by the light. "I'm always going to be with you. But you have to understand that one day you wont be able to save us." With that he opened the door and left. Leaving me there to think about what he had said.

I looked over the window on to the crossing highways. I followed the cars as they moved where they were supposed to. Inside their neat lines. Not a care in the world other than to get were the need to be.
