The only evidence that Lydia was ever in their apartment was the fully stocked fridge and a few dirty dishes in the sink. They didn't speak in the week between Christmas in New Years, she only mumbled to him that she was going to find a job on Monday, and that was the magnitude of their conversations.

"She's completely ghosting me, Scott. It's like I'm not on her radar, or something." He complained into the phone, hearing his sigh over the other line.

"That's fucked up, dude. Have you tried talking to her at all?" Stiles scratched the back of his head.

"Well, no, but I'm under the impression that if I try to talk to her she'll shank me and eat me for dinner." He overhead Allison's laugh in the background, followed by her saying 'that's so Lydia.'

Stiles scoffed, "What, like you know her so well?"

"I do, actually. We've been talking non-stop and we met for lunch on Tuesday. I've been trying to get her to talk to you again, but she says she doesn't want a relationship." Allison said, Scott complaining for her to give him his phone back.

"Who says I want a relationship?" Stiles added, silence on the other line before they both broke out laughing.

"What?" Stiles complained, finally bringing them down from their laughter.

"Please," Scott said, "You practically have those cartoon heart eyes every time you look at her. She's like your Christmas miracle or something." An image of her eyes reflecting the Christmas lights flashed before him, and Stiles realized Scott hit the nail on the head.

Lydia was his miracle, but he'd need another one to get her to talk to him again.

It was New Year's Eve, and Stiles being the holiday fanatic he was always scrambled to Times Square with Scott and Allison to watch the ball drop. It had been two years that he third wheeled during their dramatic New Year's Eve kiss, and he was hoping things might be different this year, but Lydia was still alienating him.

His breath came out it puffs of smoke, and his reddened cheeks were only partially due to the cold, the other fault being the slight buzz from the six beers he had at their favorite bar. It was only ten minutes shy of the new year, and the crowd buzzed happily in anticipation. He heard Carol from ABC news talking to several celebrities as they amped up the home viewers for the celebration.

Minutes passed as someone walked by, passing out cheap paper hats and funny glasses that say 2017 on them, along with various blowers and noise makers. He grabbed one of each, adorning the silly get-up with pride. There was only 3 minutes left, Stiles noticed, as he looked to the clock blazing in Times Square. The ball was glowing brightly, and he hooked arms around his two friends and jostled their shoulders.

"This is it, guys." He said excitedly. "Finally, a New year." They laughed and talked, messing with the noise makers when something caught Stiles' eye.

A distance away, his short, fiery room mate was pushing through the crowds with a very pissed off face in the direction of their apartment building. He gasped a bit, looking to the clock and seeing there was only two minutes left.

I can do this, he said to himself, patting Scott on the shoulder as he took off. Their confused exclamations were unheard by him as he trudged through the crowd.

She was getting closer, and he was running out of time. The clock was ticking faster and faster, the cheers of people erupting as they hit the one minute mark. Stiles grit his teeth, walking faster and faster as he pushed through the crowded streets.

30 seconds.

He felt his heart thumping in his chest; she was only a ways a way now, looking as beautiful as ever with snow dusted cheeks and a red tinted nose.

20 seconds.

He had to make it, he really, really liked her and had to make his move now before they were stuck in friendship limbo forever.

10 seconds.

The ball began to descend, and people were counting down as his pulse throbbed in his ears.

9 seconds.

8 seconds.

7 seconds.

6 seconds.

5 seconds.

He began to ran, he wasn't going to make it! There wasn't enough time.

4!

Stiles began to throw himself through the crowd, she was just up ahead.

3!

She was so close! Only a little bit farther...

2!

God damn it Stiles, faster! He stretched out his hand, his fingertips brushing the shoulder of her black coat.

1!

He made one more faithful step, grabbing her around the waist and yanking her towards him. Lydia's eyes widened for a second, and his name ghosted a whisper across her lips. He grinned, scooping her up and kissing her.

Happy new year!

People cheered and jumped around them, but it was like they were in their own little bubble. Adrenaline pumped through their veins as Lydia melted into the kiss, her hands fumbling around his neck. She kicked one foot up, and it was so horribly cliche that if she would have seen it from the outside it would've made her puke, but in the moment?

She wouldn't have it any other way.

They pulled apart, breathless and smiling. He pressed his hands to her cheeks and she laughed holding onto his forearms and grinning brightly.

"I really, really, like you, Lydia. And I have an awful lot of cookie dough ice cream, which is a horrible thing to tell a cute girl," She laughed, resting her face in his hands, reminiscing to the way they met. "But I want to give this a chance."

"Well, I'll have to take you up on that challenge." She repeated, and he lifted her into a hug, spinning her around like a princess. Scott and Allison came up behind them, grinning at the way there was pink lipstick smudged all over Stiles' face and how Lydia practically seemed to glow brighter than the Ball that dropped. They were happy, and the new year wasn't looking so dim after all.

His Christmas miracle wasn't a miracle at all, really.

It wasn't a groundbreaking discovery, and it didn't happen on 34th street.

It was a short girl who lived in the apartment down the hall.

He fell in love with with his miracle.

The end.
