A few hours later-
I still hadn't mastered the song Mr. Patel expected me to sing in the upcoming music event. The notes of the song were just too high and too long for me and the singer of 'You're gonna love me' has a very powerful voice; but on top of all of that, I thought to myself. Your heart is not in it. After Jamie left, I grabbed the lyrics and went into my mom's room.
"Hey," I told her. "So I've screwed up everything, but, singing has always been one thing I've excelled in. I though, with you, I could maybe, get the notes." I sat down on the bed next to my mom and sang to her with everything I had. Even so, it wasn't enough to get a reaction out of her, and I still couldn't get the damn notes. I cuddled up next to her and sobbed on her shoulder.
The following morning, Delia had to wake me and I was running late. Luckily, Jamie was patient and I made it to first period on time. Classes flew by and when I got to Mr. Patel's room, I'm sad to admit that, after everything, I was looking forward to seeing David; he wasn't there. Mr. Patel was though. "Cheyenne, good, I've got news, good and bad. Which do you want first?" "Uh-bad?" I said, sitting down at the piano. "Someone else will be singing 'You're gonna love me' at the competition. The rules don't have anything saying you can't sing it too, but, the judges don't smile upon it." He looked at me. "And the good news?" Mr. Patel reached over and touched the high E key on the piano. "You now only have to master this not, and, I've found you a new song." I looked at him. "But the first elimination round is next week. I can't learn a new song by then." "Of course you can." He encouraged. "You can do anything, and besides, this round is merely made to get rid of the fakers. You could song like an ape and hit that E key and make it." He joked, I sighed and touched the E note once. "Play it for me?" I asked. "Sure." he said and began playing 'Defying Gravity' on the piano.
The next week-
"So a baby shower." Libby said, as she drove Jamie and me to the place where I would be singing in the Elimination round. "You know the words to my heart." Jamie told her. "I was just thinking that exact same thing. I think we should have it when she is six months along." "why would I have a baby shower?" I asked, interrupting their private conversation. "For the presents, of course." Jamie said, as if I was crazy. "I don't even have any friends, besides you two, who would bring me gifts?" Jamie touched my arm. "Honey, we're all you need. Besides, you have Delia, and Kelsie, they can come." He stopped talking for a minute and then said, "It's not for you anyways, it's for Hayden, so you can't say no." I sighed, he was right. "Fine, but no going over board. Just a few gifts and that's is." Libby parked in a spot reserved for tonight. I got out of the care and Jamie followed me, "Cheyenne, wait." I turned to face him. "You're beautiful, remember that, and I love you, so you're going to do great." I hugged him, my swollen tummy between us, and kissed his cheek. "I love you too." "Your mom would be so proud of you." With Jamie's confidence pouring through me, I got up on the stage and sang that song better than I'd sang it in any of my practices. When that high E note came up, I only faltered a fraction of a note, and it was okay, because my mom would be proud.
When Libby was driving home she said, "So Jamie and I are going to a party. You want to go?" I gave her the look. "Never mind. I'll just...bring you home." Jamie laughed. "Cheyenne's going to be a mother. She's learning responsibility." Libby snorted a very unlady-like snort and Jamie glared at her. "What?" She asked, he rolled his eyes.
I tip-toed around my house, wearing my dad's old t-shirt, even though tip-toeing wasn't necessary, and couldn't seem to get tired. Hayden was awake, wiggling around, and I was still pumped from singing. I had just gotten comfortable in bed, 3:55 A.M., when my phone rang. Text message, from Libby: Smashed bitch, come get me. "Ugh!" I moaned and crawled out of bed. I didn't even have a car! Meet me outside, I texted back and called a cab.
