Luke's pov:
At recess Calum starts talking to me again about Emma. He thinks that I'm just being friends with her because I feel bad. But I'm not. I'm doing it because I really like her. Calum doesn't get that. So I just put the situation aside and leave it be. My phone starts to ring and its mum. She never rings me when Im at school unless its something bad. I answer it.
"Hello?" I say hesitant into the phone.
"Hey Lu, sweety you need to come home. I will explain when I see you. Meet me at the front office in 5 minutes. Ok?" My mum says with sniffles but I can tell she's trying to hold herself together but she has a gentle voice that's attempting to keep me relaxed.
"Yeah ok mum." I say quickly before hanging up.
Driving past our house made me think of the worst.
"We are going to the hospital to see your father and Ben. They were in a car accident-"
"Are they ok?" I interrupt her.
Emma's pov:
Luke left school early but he didn't mention to me why. I just let it go seen as he wasn't going to tell me. He seemed upset but I can always ask him later. I sat at the lunch table with Amy as usual until Calum walked up to us.
"Why are you hanging out with Luke?" He said meanly.
"We're friends. Why?" I asked confused.
"You really should back off. He doesn't even like you so why are you even friends with him." Calum put his hands on the table and lowered himself as he spoke. I moved away from my food being a little startled. Silence struck over me and my mouth was frozen. What if he was telling the truth. I really don't know.
"Ok." I said slowly just so Calum could drop the subject. I always disliked him. And that's the reason for it.
The bus ride home was quiet, and mostly boring. Riding the bus with Luke was something I had gotten used to but now I was lost. Stopping by Luke's house seemed like the best option to sort out the situation that became uncovered at lunch.
*knock knock* Luke's mum comes to the door. Her eyes are red and her lips are dry, her cheeks are also red and puffy from crying. I don't know what to do.
"Mrs Hemmings have I come at a wrong time?" I had always known Luke's mum. Our mums were friends but I hated Luke so I barely went over to his place.
"No, it's fine darling. We're you after Luke?"
"Yeah I was. But it's fine I can always see him at school tomorrow." I started to walk away but a hand was placed on my shoulder.
"Honey, Luke won't be at school tomorrow. Or for a few days. I think he needs a friend right now. You're more than welcome to come in and see him. I would actually prefer it if you did, now isn't a good time for him to be lonely. He needs to be occupied." I listened to Mrs Hemmings speak and try to move my head around the words that were spilling from her mouth. Picking out the words that made meaning, I still couldn't dicifer what she was talking about. Seen as she wanted it, I moved the way her hand directed me inside. I hadn't ever been in Luke's house before so this was all new to me.
"By the way Emma you don't have to call me Mrs Hemmings. Just call me Liz." I nodded at her gesture.
The house wasn't what I expected. Beige colours filled the rooms. The house was big. The lounge was like a theatre and the office was the size of my bedroom. Let alone the kitchen having a huge island in the middle that was the size of my four seated dining table at my house. Granite covered the tops of the kitchen bench with stainless steal appliances. Walking down the hall was like walking through Luke's childhood, pictures of him and his brothers as babies were first. Then first birthdays and Christmas pictures, then fifth and tenth birthdays next, a few more Christmas's and a family portrait last in black and white. It looked most recent with Luke looking like what he does now, engraved on the frame was the year it was taken. Which was this year, 2012. Finally we reached Luke's room at the end of the hall, adjacent to his brother Jack and across from his other brother Ben.
*knock* "Luke you have a visitor." Liz softly spoke.
"I don't want to see anyone mum just tell them to go away. Tell them I'm not feeling well." Luke muffled.
"But Luke you can't sit in your room all day you need to see someone."
"Who is it that wants to see me?" Luke asked feeling like it was a chore.
"It's me Luke. It's Emma!" I spoke loudly.
Silence filled the hall. The lock of Luke's door shifted and Luke opened the door. His eyes were red just like his mums, his head was down as he moved aside to let me pass. I smiled at Liz on my way through. She nodded and walked back to the kitchen. The door shut behind me and Luke fell to the floor with his hands holding his face. Silent sobs echoed and I couldn't think of anything that could bother Luke so much that he would be sobbing in front of me. Someone he used to hate.
Moving to sit beside him I put my arms around his waist and pulled his head to my chest. He cried even louder.
We stayed like that for a few hours. Just long enough for the tears to run out. Luke moved away from me.
"Luke what happened? Or would you rather not talk about it?" I said hesitantly.
"My dad was in a car accident." He said through sobs. I didn't know if I wanted to know the next answer but i had to for his sake.
"And how is he?"
"He's in surgery at the moment because he broke his neck and both his legs." Luke started to speak more normal now.
"Then you know he's going to get better."
"No I didn't finish the story." So I let him continue.
"Ben was also in the car... But he's... He's.... He's brain dead." Just after Luke speaks he can't help but cry again. All I can do is comfort him. Luke was the type of person who is very gentle and caring. So when you see him cry you can't help but cry too...the tears started rolling down my face and I couldn't stop them.
