29 ~ Clarke

I guess I fell asleep soon after we got Lexa cleaned up, but as soon as I felt her stir, I shot awake probably the fastest I ever have in my entire life. “Hey there sleepy, how you feeling?” I give her a small but worried smile.

    “Like I just got impaled by something,” she chuckles. Groaning because of the pain, she stops herself. “Clarke.”

    “I know. We don’t have to talk right now. You need to rest and heal. We can talk when you are able to laugh without being in pain.” I take her hand in mine and kiss it gently. “I love you.”

    “Ai hod yu in seintaim, klark.” She smiles and closes her eyes, falling back asleep. I lean in and kiss her forehead, then stand and exit the room.

    “She’s going to be okay.” I tell Indra, who had been standing guard outside the entire time, quietly. Indra lets out a breath, and nods her head to me.

    “Thank you, Clarke.” Wow, wasn’t expecting that. She turns back to guarding the tent as I walk off to go find something to eat. Eventually, I find one of the cooks and he hands me a large plate of food which I happily take from him. As I am about to sit down and eat, a boy not much older than fourteen, comes to my side.

    “You are Clarke, yes?” I laugh and nod my head. “I would like to thank you for saving the Heda. It means so much to me. If she were to have died, I would probably be getting ready for the ascension. I would have to fight to the death with the other Natblidas in order to become Heda. Because you have saved her, I will not have to die or kill anyone to take her place, hopefully for some time. Thank you. I don’t like my job, but if I must do it by orders of our commander, then I will. She is alive because of you. Wanheda, I will protect you until I fall.”

    I try not to start crying; his words are touching and I can’t think of anything to say but, “Thank you.”

    He smiles and stands up, “I will go so you can finish your meal now, Wanheda.” He bows respectively and turns away.

    “Wait,” I call out, “what’s your name?”

    “Aden,” he says, and then walks away.
