Chapter 5

Xavier

"Xai. That day I wanted nothing more than to follow you. I was stupid and selfish. I was a boy then and that night I searched all over for you. I can't say sorry enough." I couldn't make eye contact with him. It was hard. I felt him lift my chin and kiss my tear stained cheeks then gently kiss my lips. I heard my front door closing and immediately pushed him away knowing it was JoJo coming to stay the night. "Byron. I think you should go." I practically whispered. "Hey bae. What's he still doing here?" he asked looking between the two of us. "He put Kari to sleep and we were talking. He was just leaving." Byron stood and reached a hand out to JoJo. "It was nice meeting you and Xai. Thanks. I really appreciated it. I'll see you tomorrow." I nodded and showed him to the door. "I'll call you." I told him. He hugged me tightly after saying okay. "Goodnight Angel." I sighed deeply and sniffled a little. I walked back inside and went upstairs. I showered and climbed in bed. "You fucking him Xavi?" I sighed and continued lotioning my legs. I sat in the shower about 30 minutes crying and feeling lost and confused. "No JoJo. He just moved here. I told him about our daughter and invited him to the party." He scoffed. "So what the hell he was still doing here?" I slammed the lotion back on my stand with my lotions and smell goods. "We just talked Josef! He put Kari back to sleep and we were discussing our daughter. Now drop it or leave. Your choice. Matter fact. Get out." I started picking up everything that was his putting it into a box. "When you act like a grown ass man instead of some insecure ass boy then we have something to discuss. Goodnight." He shook his head and walked out the door. As if my life wasn't complicated already. I heard Kari whining, I knew she had been woken up. I walked in her room and picked her up. "Hey babygirl. Come on and lay with mommy." I laid in my bed with her in my arms. With her life made sense, I didn't have to be more than who I am or do things for the love and attention of others. She just gives me the I give in return unconditionaly. She was the best gift in life I had ever recieved, I don't regret her existence not one bit. I took a picture of us and sent it to Byron and posted it on Instagram. "Good night from me and Kari Bugg." I laid the phone down and went to sleep.

That kiss was sign that she still felt the same for me. I set the picture she sent me last night as my wallpaper. I texted her good morning and asked if I could come over. "Yea. I'm cooking breakfast." I told her I'll be there in 10 and went to shower. After getting dressed, I stopped by the store to pick up some flowers and headed over. I pulled up to see another car in the yard. Hoping it wasn't JoJo, I sighed. Grabbed my things and rung the door bell. I could see through the glass screen door Kari being tossed around by an older man who favored Xavier. He came to the door. "Good Morning." I returned it and Kari started reaching for me. "My granddaughter seems to know you pretty well. "I'm Mannie Lewis. Xavier's grandfather. You are?" I shook his hand. "I'm Byron. Bakhari's father." He cleared his throat and nodded. He handed Kari over to me and let me inside. I kissed on her and talked to her as I walked into the kitchen to see two older people in the kitchen with Xai. The woman cleared her throat. "DaDa." I nervously chuckled and kissed her cheek.

"Gram. PawPaw. This is Byron. Bakari's father." Xavier introduced us as she cooked. They simply nodded. "Good morning." I said as I waved. "Carlos Lawrence Sr." Her grandfather said as he shook my hand. "Nice to meet you sir." I looked at her grandmother. "Victoria." I shook her hand also and took a seat with Bakhari in my arms. We had our own conversation. "Foods ready guys." She placed 2 plates in front of me as I held Kari. She reached for her and I stopped her. "She's fine. I'll feed her." She shook her head. "Don't spoil her anymore than she already is Byron." I chuckled and kissed her head. "All angels deserve to be spoiled." I responded. I caught the look she gave me. Random conversation was made as we all ate. I could feel the slight hostility in the room. Xai and I continuously  stole glances from each other. "Byron it was nice meeting." Her grandparents told me as they were leaving. "You too." I shook her grandfathers hand and hugged her grandmother. Her grandfather is Cuban and her grandmother is black. They were her father's parents and her mother's father. Her mother is Indian and black.

Her grandfather came into the living room where we were seated with Kari in his arms. "Papi." I smiled and accepted her into my arms. Xai said she never told her I was her father but it's like she just knew, she only let men in the family hold her but with me it was different, tho I am her father it just felt good to know that my baby knows me. "I'm gonna take Khari and Aiden to the aquarium for a little while." Xai nodded. I put her in her car seat after putting on her sweater and handed it to Xai's grandfather. "Have fun Papi and be careful with my nina par favor. He chuckled and nodded. "Cross my heart." She crossed hers and took a seat on the couch. After he walked out the door it became awkward. "So you um. You got a girlfriend?" I chuckled and shook my head. "What's with you and JoJo?" She sighed. "Been dating for the past 6 months." I scoffed. "So he yo lil boyfriend?" She smirked. "Why you jealous?" I smirked. "Ion do jealous ma. You know that." She rolled her eyes. "There is a difference between talking,dating and a relationship because we can go out and kick it and not be in a relationship. Guess that's where I always seem to get it confused." She got up and walked away after that last statement she somewhat mumbled at the end. I sighed and went it to the kitchen. "What really happened that day before I found you." I felt my stomach drop. This was what I had been waiting on. I took a seat as she leaned against the sink. "I was sitting on table under the tree where I always sat,, texting you and my moms. I told you to come find me when you got the chance because I really wanted to talk. Gaven and Rico found me first. I wasn't expecting them to stay. When you showed up I panicked. I didn't want my life with you involved with those sorry assholes. When Lea walked up and kissed me I was stunned and shocked. I wasn't expecting anything to go the way it did. The way you looked at me still haunts me. I went after you Xavier. I told them off. I chased after you." By now I was standing in front of her. "I wanted you to put that necklace back on and tell me you love me too." She looked up at me in suprise. She bit her lip and I dipped in to kiss her with everything in me. "I still do. I'm scared Byron. This takes time." I nodded and kissed her again. I took out my keys and began walking away. "You got my number take all the time you need. I'll be back tomorrow to take you guys out to the zoo. I love you Xai." I walked away. I didn't expect her to say it back. "I love you too BB." I heard her whisper. That was enough for me.
