the holidays, for taehyung, consisted of his aunt soo's loud shrieks and her children's equally as loud yells.
he often found himself sitting on the edge of his bath tub, thinking about how nice the christmas holidays would be without his little cousins swarming him and begging him to give them his laptop and his aunt's snarky comments."eun, you have such a crap television. doesn't taehyung's father send in money for child support?" his aunt would ask casually. and taehyung would find himself struggling to hold himself back from throwing a brick at her head.
but his mother only waved off her comments and continued to smile at her sister, nothing could deter the christmas feeling.thankfully his aunt soo, uncle and cousins left after christmas and didn't bother staying for new years. taehyung was more than happy to sit curled up on the sofa and watch films whilst his mom hummed and painted her nails besides him.
and of course, jungkook called throughout the week. their conversations were short and quick since taehyung's cousins' loud chatter disrupted them but it was still nice to hear jungkook's voice over the phone.

jungkook, on the other hand, slept throughout the one week of holiday that the college permitted. he did nothing but sleep and endless amount and eat the ramen that yoongi brought over for him.he spent christmas facetiming his mom and sister, grinning as ji yeon chatted to him about school and her friends. but when it was his mom's turn to talk, he found his smile slipping. she talked about the upcoming wedding where she'd marry her boyfriend, and talked about how excited she was. then jungkook found his smile completely dropping when she passed the phone on to lee youngho - his soon to be stepfather - to wish him a merry christmas. jungkook replied by mumbling a quick "thanks" before hastily saying goodbye and hung up.
now, he sat in his boxers, on his bed and slurped steaming noodles into his mouth whilst listening attentively to the person on the phone. he was calling a flower company, and was planning on ordering roses for taehyung's late birthday and sending it to his home.
he had only heard that taehyung's birthday was yesterday from jin and now hastily ordered plants for taehyung."okay so lemme just make sure - clovers show what again?" jungkook asks, stirring his noodles around with his chopsticks.
he hears the shop assistant on the phone, sigh, "four leaf clovers represent luck and can also be represented to say 'be mine'."
jungkook hums, "okay, and what about the tulips again?"
this time the shop assistant sighs louder, repeating for the umpteenth time what tulips symbolise. "a bouquet of tulips is a traditional decoration of love, best to give when you want someone to believe that you're sincere."
"alright, can you said a bouquet of pink tulips and clovers to someone for me?"
"yes, sir. is that all?"
"can you send a message along with it?"

taehyung pads downstairs in his socks, inhaling the welcoming scent of toast as he entered the kitchen. he smiles at the helium filled balloons tied to the table legs. his birthday had passed but decorations still hung from the ceiling and colourful wrapping paper still overflowed from the bin.he grins as his mom hands him toast with jam spread on top. he takes a bite whilst his mom prepared to go to work; slipping her feet into her loafers and fixed her hair in the hall mirror.
"taehyung, someone sent you flowers and a cute cake." she says, pointing at the bright bouquet sitting atop the table surface and the small cake decorated with his name in cursive white chocolate icing. fresh strawberries are set around the top of the cake with blobs of whipped cream in between.
miss kim raises an eyebrow, grinning, "you got a secret admirer or something? a boyfriend that you've hidden away from me? hmm?"
"huh?" taehyung walks over to the table and studies the little bouquet of pink tulips and clovers.
"well, im going to work. put the flowers in a vase or something. oh, and ill be home early so we can countdown to 2017!" his mom calls out before exiting the house with her bags full of beauty products. "don't eat too much cake! you completely ate up yesterday's - you'll get sick!"
taehyung yells a goodbye, his eyes flitting down to the little rectangle of card tucked into the bouquet. he takes the card and reads the message written whilst running his fingers lightly over the soft petals.
to taehyung,
you didn't tell me it was your birthday!! here's your one day late birthday present - you might wanna google what the tulips and clovers represent. oh and i got you a strawberry cake - it's kinda small but it's strawberry and cream - i know how much you like that cake flavour,
-jungkooktaehyung smiles at the message, reaching for his phone to search up the meanings of clovers and tulips.
he can't stop the grin surfacing once he finds the meanings of jungkook's flowers.he takes the bouquet with both hands and brings it close to his face to peer at the flowers, pleased with jungkook's gift.
