Lankris's eyes are not black anymore. They were not black at the zoo. It was just a strange thing that one time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's the next day, from the time Axarion kissed me. I didn't sleep much last night. I was too busy starring at my ceiling, replaying the amazing kiss over and over in my head. It was like nothing I ever experienced before. And it makes me wonder what brought his sudden advances on me. Is it like he said, that he has been so busy with everything going on? So that this couldn't happen before? Or is there some other reason?
I mean, I saw the way he looked at Lankris. Not exactly friendly... I wish I weren't a girl sometimes. Overthinking is a giant habit when it comes to being a girl.
Well, I think I'm gonna go visit Kolfin. I feel close to the old mer ever since we made acquaintances.
"I don't really care what you call me,
As long as you don't call me rude.
...
The night ended with that's all she wrote." I softly sung out as I begin the swim to Kolfin's house.
As I become nearer to his place, I think back to when I bumped into Lankris. He seemed so strange... Besides his eyes. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it just sends shivers down my back just by thinking about it.
I am now at Kolfin's door, and I raise my arm to knock. A few moments later, the aged mer opens the door. The same dismissive look is portrayed on his face as the first time I saw him. But as soon as he saw it was me, his face lit up, and a small friendly smile creased his lips.
"Aquema! What a wonderful surprise! Come in come in!" He rattles of as he steps out of the way for me to enter.
Follow on in and he gets to making fish tea right away.
"So, what brings you around here?"
"Well, I was just sitting around my room, and decided, why not come visit. So, here I am!" I informed him.
"So you are!" He chuckled. "And thank you by the way. You have no idea how lonely it can get for an old man like me around here."
"Your not that old!"
"Ahahah I'm not exactly a frisky young merman anymore." He amused.
"Yes, but that doesn't mean your ancient."
"Whatever you say. I just hope you don't expect me to go racing around like you youngin's. I'm likely to break my tail."
"Oooh I'd bet you'd be fine." I snickered at him.
He looked up at me from the tea. "You are certainly one of a kind Aquema."
I smile at the sweet mer.
"Now sit downs and drink your tea before it gets cold!"
"Yes sir!" I exclaimed. I settled down in the same chair as before, and took my tea. Bringing the cup to my mouth, I closed my eyes and took a nice sip. The warm liquid slid down my throat, feeling so good,
"Ahh. This really is great tea Kolfin."
"Thank you dear. I take pride in my tea!" He pauses to take a slurp of his drink. "Now then, tell me what's been going on with you."
"Hmm.. Well I went to the zoo with Axarion..-"
"Ah the king. He is by far the best king Aquaris has ever had.. Always putting the needs of the citizens first.. Always risking himself for the needs of others... He's a good man. Proved himself of that many times over. He make a move on you?"
"Yes he is a great man.. And yes actually. He kinda... Maybe. Sorta. Ish... Kissed me? Twice.."
Kolfin chuckled. "Ah ah ah. You youngin's get friskier every generation I tell ya."
"Kolfin!" I laugh at his remark, causing him to laugh back at me.
"Yes well, he will take great care of you. If he treats you anything like the way he treats his citizens, you will be safe and cared for. I can tell you that."
"He does treat me good.. He makes me feel special."
Kolfin raises an eyebrow. "Oooh I see here. You've got that gleam in your eyes. Lookin like you got yourself a lover, eh? "
"Oh I don't know... I'm probably just overreacting."
"One can never call love an overreaction Aquema."
I think about what he said in silence, nodding slightly to myself as I realize he's correct.
We continue to chat and ponder on about random things going on. Its got to have been two more hours by the time I am forced to dismiss myself. I didn't tell anyone I was going out before I left the kingdom. The last thing I want is the whole city going on a rampant search for me, thinking I have abandoned them to face the Democis alone.
"You come back and visit me anytime, ya hear?" Kolfin called out as I swam out the door.
"I will!"
Kolfin smiled and closed his door. I turned and started out towards the direction I came. Suddenly, a small pebble rolled out from thick, creepy reeds, stretching up at least 40 feet.
I stop and look around, trying to see something, anything through the thick reeds. Nothing. There's nothing there.
Shaking my head I continue on. But just as I am about to swim again, a low muffled sound comes from the direction of the reeds.
I abruptly turn, a shiver running through me. "H-hello? Is anyone there?"
Nothing.
"Hello..?"
Still nothing. It's as if whatever it was, stopped and silenced as I called out.
I look back to Kolfin's house. He is still in there. I would've been able to see him come out from here. So it can't be him trying to scare me.
That's when it happened. A high pitch, battle cry sounded through the air. The screech nearly deafened me! I spun just as something shot out from the reeds, barely missing me as it tumbled past clumsily.
I straightened from my awkward position, and prepared to attack. That's when I saw it. This... thing..
It is covered in tattered rags as some sort of clothes, and it's tail winds down crooked and deformed. It's ragged black hair came from its head in short tufts, leaving it bawled in most places. It's skin is a ghostly grey, a small bit lighter than it's tail. Not to mention all the deep cuts and scars covering most of its body. Leaving clumps of skin just dangling off of him. Dark liquid oozed from the cuts, sending a foul stench wafting towards me. It's eyes... They are.. Rolled back in its head. Leaving only the whites showing.
I am frozen in shock at this horrid sight before me. Just his eyes and the foul sent is enough to make me gag.
The creature lunged at me, barring yellowed fangs stained with darkening blood from its past victims.
To my luck, I was able to snap out of my shocked state and dodge out of the way. I flinched as I heard his teeth snap right where my neck was only seconds before. The thing looked confused for a moment before it fiercely shook it's head, growling. It slowly turned to look at me, it's white eyes goring into mine.
Ew how can it even see me like that... Oooooooh I'm gonna barf. WHAT AM I THINKING. I CANT BARF RIGHT NOW! THIS FREAK IS TRYING TO KILL ME!
Before it can lunge for me again, I spin, flinging my tail out to meet across his middle. I hear a thud as my tail batters his stomach. The thing is sent flying back into the reeds. Something drips off my tail. I look down and see some of the oozing black stuff smeared on my tail from where I touched the thingy-mic-bobber.
Oh that's nasty. Now my tail smells...
Something rams into me from behind! I hear teeth snapping next to my ear and I panic! Wriggling, I attempt to get out from under the thing on top of me. But it's no use seeing I'm on my stomach and the strange excessive weight of this creature is pinning me to the ground with no hope of getting up.
With no other option, I turn to my only hope. I scream. "HELP!!!!!!!!!! SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
But there is no one around. Out this far, on the edge of the city, there is nothing but little fish to hear my cries.
The thing is still trying to bite me, but my wiggling is preventing the dumb thing from having success. Knowing no one is going to be able to help me, I close my eyes and wait for the worst.
But the worst never came. To my surprise, the weight was lifted off of me. I glance up to see nothing but clear ocean water above me. Confused I stand up and look around. Less than two seconds later, I scream and am back on the ground. The body of the creature was flung over my head, just inches from hitting me, as a spear was driven through it, sending it flying in its traumatic death that could have easily been mine.
I stand up once again to see who saved me. And there stood a panting Kolfin. His eyes were clouded with an urgent emotion I couldn't read.
I dart forward and hug him. "You saved my life! Thank you so much! I thought I was going to die! What was that thing?"
Kolfin pried me off of him and looked me in the eyes. "Aquema you need to go to the kingdom now. Don't stop, don't look back. And tell the king exactly what happened. Do you understand?"
I nodded just as urgently as his eyes reflected.
"Go! Now!"
I spun off. Just as I was about to turn the corner, I thought of Kolfin. Would he be safe? Looking back I see him enter his house and glance left and right before closing his door. He will be safe in there.
I now swim off as fast as I can.
I've got to get to the kingdom. Right. Now.
