Dearest Sophie,
I am writing you this from Iraq. It's hot here but I don't mind. I'm sorry I never came back I kinda got caught. Stupid undercover cops! Anyways I'm a soldier here. Protecting Fathers, Brothers, wife's, and sisters is what I wanted. I wanted to make sure they are able to go home to their family. So I got permission to fight in the war. How are you? How's Charlie? Well write me back. When I'm finished with the tour I'll visit you. But I'm positive that I'll come back into the war to protect others.
                     -sincere apologies
                               Sammy
I folded the paper and put it into an envelope. I addressed it and sent it out in the mail room.
I walked back out to see my platoon. I walked over and sat down.
"Did you go to school?" Caleb asked me. With that question all eyes are on me.
'Um I tried to. I mean it's hard to go to school when you wake up bloody from the last beating. Then only to get beat up more when trying to get up marking to much noise for their hangovers.' I said looking down.
"Well we can help with that. The general shipped over books for you to learn from." Percy said.
'Ok let me see them.' I said hold my hands out.
They passed me some text books. Physics, calculus, English, Spanish, etc.
'Does he remember that I am only fourteen right?' I asked looking up.
Caleb chuckled at my comment.
"I thought you were supper smart?" He asked.
I rolled my eyes and started reading. Then I was handed a piece of paper with assignments on them.
'Oh come on I'm in a war zone and they expect me to turn in five papers a day?' I wined.
The whole platoon laughed. Holding their stomachs on the ground. I started my work. I wanted to be ahead so if something comes up I don't have to worry about it. I have my gun beside me so if an alarm went off I can get there quick. I have finished calculus and physics. So right now I am working on English and Spanish. I heard movement on the border perimeter I put down my books and grabbed my gun. I walked slowly over to the bush and held my gun up.
A guy stepped out with his hands out.
/A|N bold means different languages depending where they are at./
(Hello)
-(Hello why are you at our border?)-
(What do you mean?) he asked with his arm now behind his back.
-(Hands where I can see them!)- I yelled.
He held his hands out to show he has a switch. He pressed the button. For something to beep in the bush.
'Bomb!' I yelled.
I shot the man and covered the bomb.
Three....two....one....
there was bright light then harsh heat and ringing. I can feel myself flying through the air. I landed by the tent. I coughed several times. I can see Caleb's face over mine. His mouth was moving but I can't hear what he is saying. I got up and shook my head. He grabbed my shoulders trying to get my attention. Then I can hear.
'That was fun and all but I will try not to do that again. That hurt.' I said looking at the spot I was at. The bush was chard and black. The man still lay on the ground with a smirk on his face for eating the bomb.
'Caleb am I going to get PTSD?' I asked.
"Really you laid on a bomb got blown up and you ask if your getting PTSD? Unbelievable." He said. The rest of the platoon just laughed at my antics. While the camp is looking at me with confusion and wonder.
'Alright go back to sleep it's going to be a long day tomorrow.' I yelled.
They all went back to their tents except the Sargent that is in charge of the camp. He ran to the mail tent and sent a letter to the general about the accident. I just shook my head and went back to my homework. This was just a hard days of work.
