-------------2 week later------------
My dad has some crazy idea that when my arm heals, I'm going to train Conway and jump him. Like that's going to happen. He's insane! I hardly want to get back on Ace, how can I ride Conway?
I fall on to my bed and sit there for a while. Life is so complicated. I have to deal with work, horses and my broken arm. I'm scared to get back on a horse, whether it's Ace or any other horse at the barn.
Snapping back into reality, I look at the clock on my wall to see that it's time to feed the horses. I go outside to the main barn and begin to give the horses hay. Right when I'm almost done, I notice a boy giving one horse hay.
"Oh, that's my job." I say to him. He looks at me for a while. He must be new. Before walking off, I take a bit of time to study him: grey eyes, dirty blonde hair and a muscular structure. Why did he just stare at me?
I finish feeding the horses then go back inside. The smell of lasagna fills the house. Mom must be making my favorite for dinner. When I step into the kitchen, as suspected, she's already taking the lasagna out of the oven.
"Hey, Nora." she says, "I made your favorite!"
"I see. What's the special occasion? We never have lasagna, except for on special occasions."
"Have you forgotten?" she asks, "Tomorrow, you're getting your cast off."
How could I have forgotten? It's been a month already! This is both good and bad. My arm is completely healed now, but my dad will want me to get back on a horse. How can I get out of this?
-------------1 Week Later-------------
This is only my second time being back on a horse since the cast came off, and I'm on Bentley, one of the calmest horses at our barn. He's an paint Oldenburg cross whose 17.1hh, but still a gentle giant.
"Nora, relax." Claudia commands, "Bentley isn't going to do anything but what you ask."
I turn my head to look at the 2' cross rail. It's almost sad to think that I used to jump 3'9" oxers and now I'm too nervous to jump a little cross rail. I push Bentley on at a trot and go over the jump. My form is terrible. I allow my legs to slide back, I have no release and my heels are horrendous.
"Okay, we're done." Claudia says. I dismount and walk Bentley over to the main barn. I notice the new stable hand sweeping the isle way. I stop in my tracks. Once he notices me, he stops and begins to walk away.
"I can come back later." I say. I expect him not to say anything, as usual, but he surprises me.
"It's fine." he says, "I'm done anyway."
I go to the crossties and take off Bentley's bridle. Why is the new stable hand so shy?
