I walk inside, dreading the conversation I'm about to have with my dad. He gestures for me to sit down on the couch. I reluctantly do so. I wait for him to speak while he paces back and forth.
"Nora, I know that you were upset about Loren leasing Ace, but this is getting ridiculous." he says, "You've isolated yourself in your room for nearly a week. When will this stop?"
"When you stop making huge decisions without even consulting me! How long before Ace gets sold, huh?" I ask. My dad is silent. He tries to say something else, but before he can I run out to the barn. Greyson spots me running in.
"Nora, what's wrong?" he asks. I try to reply, but end up sobbing. Greyson holds me close to him while I cry.
"I can't take this." I say in between sobs, "I need to get out of here." Greyson nods and takes me to his car. He drives away, not telling me where he's going. The silence between us is deafening. He probably doesn't want to talk to me after what just happened.
After driving for a bit, he pulls into the parking lot of this old restaurant. We go in to see that barely anyone is here. He leads me to a table and we sit down. The restaurant is a run-down diner. The waitresses seem tired and bored.
I wait for Greyson to say something, but he never does. I decide to break the silence, but am unable to decide what to say. Instead, I stutter and stumble over my word like and idiot. I finally compose myself.
"I'm sorry for what happened earlier. I probably looked like a wreck."
"Don't worry about it." he mumbles, "We all need a break from family sometimes."
A waitress comes up to our table and hands us menus. We look at the food, once gain commencing in awkward silence. I'm not sure why he decided to bring me to this diner. I'm just glad I'm not home.
"So, why did you bring me here?" I ask. Greyson pauses.
"You said you wanted to get away...'
"No, I mean specifically to this diner." I interrupt. He lets out a sigh.
"My mom used to work here. This is where I go whenever I'm stressed or just need a break from the rest of the world." He says, "I especially know what it feels like to just need to be away from my dad."
I pause.
"I saw you arguing with a man a couple of weeks ago... was that your dad?" I ask. Oh, God, I probably shouldn't have said that! Greyson is silent for a while.
"Yes, that was my dad." he replies. Once again, we are both silent. It's obviously a touchy subject for him. We agree to leave and drive around town. When I look at my phone there are many missed calls from both my mom and dad.
"Hey, can we go back to my house?" I asks, "It's getting late."
"Sure." Greyson says. We drive back to my house and pull into the driveway. I feel like I'm going to be sick. I don't even want to enter my house. Greyson notices my discomfort and places his hand on top of mine.
I gasp. We both look at each other. I flash him a smile before running inside. For a moment, I think that nobody is awake, but I am soon greeted with a question laced with venom.
"Where the hell have you been?"
