"Interesting, huh?" I repeat, eyes gleaming with mischief.
Kat nods. "Well, yeah. I still don't really know him, but he's definitely interesting, I know that much."
I smirk to myself, fingers crossed - if my plan succeeds then she won't be able to say that she doesn't really know him again. She probably won't be too happy with my interfering in her love life, but if there's one thing Kat's not, it's ungrateful. She often complains that I spend too much time with Tyler (which is weird, because he says I spend too much time with my friends), but if she has someone like that in her life, maybe that will balance things out a little more. Actually, I'm beginning to feel a little giddy now, thinking about double dates and things that Kat and I have wanted to do since before either of us had even had a boyfriend; we could all hang out together - well, assuming Skye double dates count, given that Ashton doesn't actually live in the UK.
And, my conscience interjects, assuming you still have a boyfriend after he finds out about the kiss. If he finds out about the kiss.
When he finds out about the kiss, I correct. When I tell him. Because I refuse to be that girl who indulges in a kiss with someone that isn't her boyfriend or girlfriend, and then goes on acting as if it never happened.
"You okay?" Kat asks, placing her hand on my shoulder in concern, tearing me from my thoughts and my stupid mind.
I try on a smile, and nod. "Yeah," I lie. "Fine."
I know she can see through my dishonesty - with Kat, my lies are about as invisible as a T-Rex traipsing around Trafalgar Square - but I can't bring myself to tell her just yet, although I will admit that I am considering spilling everything to her. She's one of the most level-headed people I know, and although she may reprimand me for my actions, I'm confident that she will give me rational advice.
Kat grabs a bottle of Sprite, and I follow her into the queue at the other end of the little shop. A woman lines up behind us, waiting to pay for petrol, and a few seconds later, Ash and Cal join the queue. Ashton's eyes are fixated on something ahead of me, but I manage to catch Cal's eye, and he waves, beckoning me towards the two of them. "I'll be right back," I tell my best friend, before making my way to the back of the line to join them. "What's up?" I raise an eyebrow expectantly at Calum.
He thrusts an accusatory finger towards Ashton. "This weirdo wants to know about your friend."
"No I don't," Ashton protests, snapping out of his little trance.
Calum rolls his eyes. "Okay, well then I want to know about your friend so that, when he asks about her later while you're at school, I can actually give him some details."
"If he's that desperate to find out more about her, why doesn't he ask her out sometime?"
Ashton glares at me. "Maybe because he doesn't want to. And because he's only in this part of the UK for a couple more weeks. Also: he has a name."
"Oh, really?" Calum says, not even attempting to conceal the amused smile playing on his lips. "Then why has he been calling himself 'he' for the past two minutes? And for God's sake, Ashton, stop staring at her!"
"I'm not," Ashton insists, which is pretty unconvincing because he says this while his eyes are focused on Kat.
"Good luck with that," Calum smirks.
"If it makes you feel any better, she's pretty oblivious," I offer, as I begin to wind my way back past the woman in front of us to Kat. "She won't even realise you're looking at her." It's completely true. Even if Ashton walks right up to her, looks her right in the eyes and professes his undying love for her, she still won't totally believe it. Kat's just one of those people I guess.
