Chapter 1 -
I wake up to the sound of my alarm in my New York City apartment shared between me and my best friend Megan. I sit up and hit the off button. I walk across the room over to my small closet and grab my uniform for work. I work at "Fedoras, Shades, and Suits". I work in the hat department. I make sure to "Sell! Sell! Sell!" as my boss likes to say. I help customers find hats for costume parties, weddings, and any other important events you can think of. Megan works at "Claire's", which is right next to "Fedoras, Shades, and Suits" at the mall. I started working at the store when I was 16, and that was 5 years ago. This means I should probably be getting a promotion to manager anytime now.
The smell of cinnamon rolls baking shook me from my thoughts. Megan wants to go to cooking school. She has been saving up money to open her own bakery. After I finished throwing on my shirt for work and a pair of jeans, I walked out of my room to the kitchen.
"Smells good," I said, sitting down at one of the stools.
"Thanks," Megan replied, "just a few more minutes."
I nodded as I grabbed myself a piece of bacon off of the counter. Megan turned on the tv that sat across the room in our living room. She turned it to the Movie Gossip channel.
"Josh Hutcherson or Liam Hemsworth? You decide." the announcer stated.
"JOSH! Who else?" Megan said, screaming.
I sat with my back to the tv. I reached over and grabbed another piece of bacon. I snatched the remote from Megan and turned the tv off.
"Hey, what did you do that for?" Megan asked, angrily.
I shook my head. The timer went off for the cinnamon rolls, just in time. I smiled. Megan pulled out the cinnamon rolls, my eyes grew big. They were jumbo cinnamon rolls.
"Wow!" I exclaimed.
"Yah, I thought the recipe said they were regular size, otherwise I wouldn't have made so many." Megan nodded in agreement.
"Who cares?!" I shouted, reaching onto the tray and snatching one of the cinnamon rolls.
Megan laughed.
"What?" I asked innocently with food stuffed in my cheeks.
Megan laughed again. She grabbed a cinnamon roll and walked over to the counter and grabbed her purse.
"Come on, I don't wanna be late," Megan stated as she looked at me, cheeks still stuffed.
I nodded in agreement. I grabbed another cinnamon roll and ran out the door.
...
Megan and I parted our separate ways once we arrived at work. Me in "Fedoras, Shades, and Suits" and Megan in "Claire's". I walked inside, scanned my key card, and threw my stuff behind the counter.
Finally, my first customer walked in. It was an elderly gentleman.
"Excuse me, miss," the gentleman started, "do you know where I can find any white hats? I looked around and all I found were peach colored hats."
I nodded and waved the man to follow me. He followed as I searched for a white hat. It didn't take long, because I had the store memorized like the back of my hand. Our store was the largest "Fedoras, Shades, and Suits" store in the country. I found a selection of white hats and pointed to them.
"Thank you," the man replied.
"Your welcome. Let me know if you need anything else, sir." I stated, smiling.
He nodded, eyes wide with the large selection of white hats. I walked back over towards the counter and sat down. I turned on the computer and went through our catalog to see if we needed to order any more hats. All of our hats are specially made. That means that I have to order way ahead of time, even if we aren't running low.
"Excuse me, miss," a deep voice said to me.
I looked up at the man. He was smiling. He looked very handsome from what I could see. He wore sunglasses that covered up his identity. He has blonde hair that was nicely cut. I blushed.
"Would you like to check out?" I asked as calmly as possible.
"Yes," the man replied, laying his hat on the counter.
"Would that be all?" I asked.
He nodded. I waited for the receipt to print while I started to bag his hat.
"No, you don't have to bag it. I wanna wear it." the man corrected me.
"Sorry," I handed him the hat.
I gave him his receipt and smiled.
"Come again," I shouted as he started to walk away.
"Wait! Miss, do you know where I can get a good burger around here?" the man asked.
He pulled off his sunglasses. He had really pretty eyes. They're hazel.
"There's Joe's Burgers. It's just down the road from here. Just drive about a block down the street and you will find it on your left. You could also try Red Robin, if you like their burgers." I answered matter of factly.
"Thank you," he replied, "By the way, don't tell anyone I was here."
"Don't plan on it," I said, laughing.
"Thank you so much! I really appreciate it." he stated happily.
"Your welcome," I answered.
He put back on his sunglasses and walked out of the store casually with his hat placed on his head.
You know? He looked really familiar. Like a movie star or something. I snorted. No. He couldn't be. I shook the thought from my mind and got back to work.
...
Later, Megan and I were trying to decide where to eat for dinner. I felt too tired to go anywhere, but Megan was insistent on going somewhere. Megan asked how work was, but I was too worn out to remember anything. For some reason that I can't explain, I'm in the mood for a burger from "Joe's Burgers".
