lance had asked keith to go with him to abuelita's funeral, but keith instantly declined, saying it was a family ordeal and keith didn't want to intrude.
"she would've wanted you there," lance murmured, his thumb running over keith's knuckles. "she always told me to find someone good, someone worth holding onto. she was the first one to know about my sexuality and she immediately accepted me. please, keith. it would mean a lot if you came."
"alright," keith agreed, pressing a soft kiss to the back of lance's hand, before his eyes fluttered closed as lance cupped his cheek.
"thank you."---
the whole time, lance practically clung to keith. their hands were always conjoined, and anytime they sat, lance's side pressed all the way up against keith's. keith had to undergo the task of meeting lance's family and impressing them, while simultaneously watching lance's body language to make sure he was okay. of course he wasn't okay, but he knew lance wanted to run to the bathroom and sit there the whole time, so keith had to ground him so he wouldn't dart.
keith was constantly rubbing lance's back with his fingertips, knowing it soothed him and made him feel better - if just a little bit. lance completely broke down during the actual funeral, and keith just pulled him against his chest and let him cry, rubbing his shoulders and back.
the funeral ended and they headed to the cemetery. keith sat back on his hands and watched as lance and his family threw a handful of dirt over the casket that had been lowered into the ground. keith's heart shattered as lance collapsed against his mother and sobbed. keith had never seen him this upset - and it completely broke him.
keith stayed that night with lance, running his fingers through his hair, wiping away stray tears, and whispering sweet things to the blue eyed boy in front of him. while keith brought his hand down to brush lance's tears, lance grabbed his hands.
"thanks for going," he whispered, kissing keith's palm sweetly. "i-i don't know how i would've done it without you."
"anything for you," keith murmured, giving lance a small smile. the boy attempted one back, but it was feeble, so keith just pulled lance against him and held him tightly.
lance began humming a song - keith didn't know what it was, but it obviously brought lance some comfort, so he didn't ask. eventually, his eyes began to grow heavy, and lance's humming stopped, replaced with deep, steady breaths. keith kissed the top of lance's head sweetly and closed his eyes, falling asleep.
