As I make my way into the Myer building my nerves start to kick in. First days are always never racking to me, especially because I won’t know anyone here. At my past jobs there was always a friend I knew who worked there. But because I know no one around here that’s not the case this time. On the bright side I do get to meet new people from this area which will be good for me.
My high heels click against the tile floors as I walk through the giant retail store. I think this Myer is the biggest one they have in Melbourne because it’s dead set in the middle of the city. I make my way through the store and over to the lingerie section. It’s the biggest lingerie section I have ever seen in any shop. I walk over to the first desk I see and wait patiently in the small line to talk to the employee. A couple people buy a few items and I question why people are out so early in the morning. If it wasn’t for work I would most defiantly still be asleep.
When I reach the front of the line I am greeted by a middle aged women, who looks like she knows exactly what she’s doing.
“Good Morning Miss, how may I help you?” She chirps behind the back of the counter.
“Hello, I’m Harmony. It’s actually my first day here today and I was wondering on where I go.” I reply with a welcoming smile.
“Harmony, harmony.” She mumbles scrolling her finger down a list of names.
“Harmony Lukas?” The lady asks looking up at me.
“Yes, that’s me.” I smile fiddling with my fingers.
“What a beautiful name Harmony. I’m Roxy, your manager.” She smiles sticking her hand out over the bench. This is probably one of the most professional jobs I have had so far. I have never given someone a handshake before.
“Nice to meet you Roxy.” I smile shaking her hand strongly. Dad used to always say a handshake gives one of the first impressions of the person.
“Follow me. I will show you where you can place your things.” Roxy smiles walking out behind the desk and down to the back of the lingerie section.
She leads me into a small room that has a few employees’ items in it. She points to a place where I can put my bag down and I do so.
“Here is your name badge.” She smiles handing me over a little badge printed with Harmony on it. I quickly pin it on my clean white blazer and draw my attention back to her.
“Your shift today is 9 till 5 so you can have an hour lunch break whenever you want.” She tells me leading me out of the small room through the lingerie section.
She starts to tell me about what my job will be including and who I will work with and all things like that. I listen closely trying not miss out on any detail. When it comes to jobs I am very serious and professional. You could say I’m a hard worker and I also catch on pretty quickly to new things. She shows me around the lingerie section and points out all the different brands. Lucky for me, I’m pretty familiar with lingerie and their brands because I have previously worked in this section before, just in a smaller retail store.
Roxy seems like a really good manager. She’s nice and doesn’t seem too strict about everything which is good. The last thing I want is a mean manager telling me I’m doing everything wrong.
“Today you can just follow me around to see how to do things and stuff like that.” She smiles towards me.
“That sounds great.” I reply back tucking my loose hair behind my ears.
The need assistance bell rings from the desk over in the corner of the lingerie section, so Roxy and I hurry off to the small forming line. I watch closely as Roxy greets the customers and scans there items through. I follow her fingers as she quickly clicks buttons on the key board working with the system.
