'it’s terribly endearing'

Jacob’s POV

I walk into work today, quite exhausted to say the least. The day has taken a lot out of me already.

Jenn greets me with that same friendly smile while I hang up some new inventory on the clothing racks and then I take my place back behind the register as I see more customers walking in.

“How are you doing Jacob?” Jenn asks, leaning on the counter while her blonde hair falls in her face.

“I’m good,” I say with a smile back.

“So…I wanted to ask,” she says standing up straight again and making her way behind the counter to stand beside me. “Why is this not hung up?” my heart sinks and I squeeze my eyes shut for a second, knowing I had been caught for hiding (not so well apparently) the shirt I was going to get for Troye.

“I uh…” I trail off, not knowing what to say really, she caught me.

“You saving up for it for that boy who always comes here just before we close hey?” she says knowingly with a sweet smile.

“Yeah,” I say nervously, placing my hand on the back of my neck. “I’m sorry Jenn… I just wanted… ugh he just loves it so much and-”

“Take it Jacob, no cost,” she interrupts my rambling with that same sweet smile.

“Seriously?” I ask in disbelief.

“Yeah, it’s not a big deal,” she insists.

“No Jenn, it’s fine really, I only have to save up a bit more and I can-”

“Jacob,” she says while placing a hand on my shoulder, despite me being way taller. “Take it love, seriously you deserve not having to pay for it. I don’t need you to spend more than needed as you are still a student. Plus you work so well here, take it as a small bonus or something if makes you feel better.”

“Wow, thank you Jenn,” I say with a huge and grateful smile.

“Of course,” she says, taking it from my amazing hiding spot and placing it into a bag and handing it to me. “I hope he likes it.”

“Oh I know he will,” I say with bright eyes, already planning on how I want to give it to him.

“See you tomorrow,” she says, leaving me in the store alone except for the customers.

…….

“So what you want to do?” I ask, entering my apartment with Troye and Bruno behind me that Friday night.

“I don’t know it’s your place.”

“A movie and popcorn?” I enquire.

“Yeah,” he says brightly, taking off his shoes at the door and then sitting on the sofa with Bruno while I make some popcorn in the kitchen.

Troye’s choice on an old Nicholas Sparks film is no surprise to me, he is such a romantic at heart; it’s terribly endearing. I find that I watch him more than the movie however. He listens so carefully and will ask the odd question about what is happening on the screen but otherwise he needs close to no help with figuring it out. When the credits come up Troye is almost asleep but I make sure to keep him awake for at least a little while longer.

“Before you sleep over there, T,” he perks up immediately, sitting up and rubbing his eyes like a small child.
“Yeah?” he asks sweetly.

“Wait right here,” I say while trying to hide my excitement, rushing up the stairs and getting what I need.

“Jacob? What’s going on?” he asks with a smile while Bruno sits obediently at his feet.
