'he will be okay, we will be okay'

As it is term break my parents will be coming to New York for a couple days then they will be visiting other family than live here in the states. Unfortunately Steele cannot get here and neither can Tyde because his school will not be closing for another few weeks so he will be staying with Steele. At least mum, dad and Sage will be here though.

Jacob is sort of nervous for their arrival but little does he know that my parents really do adore him and Sage as well. Sage has not even met him before besides the occasional Skype call.

Jacob has been doing better over the past month. He eats without me having to force him, he still sleeps a lot but it is not as restless, and he is talking to me much more. Yet, I still have this nagging feeling that he is now suppressing his emotions and just telling me he is fine when he really is not, I hope I am wrong though.

Jacob and I are preparing dinner together, a simple dish of macaroni and cheese; my family will all be here soon. I can hear that Jacob is fidgeting a lot with utensils and anything else he can get his hands on which is a clear sign of his nerves but I roll my eyes fondly.

“Jakey babe, calm down,” I plead.

“I am calm,” he insists quickly.

“Then put down whatever you are messing with over there before you break it,” I imagine him rolling his eyes, but he listens because I hear him put down the utensil. “Can you get the dish out the oven?” I ask as I get out a bottle of wine and several glasses.

“Sure,” just as he opens the oven there is a knock on my front door. Jacob nearly drops the dish I think as I hear it clatter against the grill in the oven. I giggle quietly to myself.

“You have the oven mitts on, yeah?” I tease.

“Shut up,” he says but I know he is trying hard to not smile because he knows I know, I always know.

I then saunter out the kitchen to the door. Upon opening it I smell my mum’s perfume and then her arms are around me before I can process them finally being here. I smile broadly, melting into my mother’s warm embrace. I hug her just as tightly and then she presses several kisses to my face after. My dad places a hand on my shoulder and I can sense Sage is right beside me, her sweet scent floating around as well.

“Oh my Tokky, I missed you so much,” mum says, then lets me go to allow my sister to get a hug in as well.

“I missed you too, ma,” I say to her and then hug Sage tightly who presses a chaste kiss to my cheek and I just know she left whatever dark shade of lipstick she is wearing on my skin but I do not even mention it.

“Dad,” I say with a bright smile, hugging him tightly then as well, he pats my back, whispering his “I missed you so much, boy,” in my ear.

I lead them to the kitchen; hopefully Jacob has not started a fire.

“Jacob, so good to see you again,” my mum says, I then hear her walk to my boy and then I know she is hugging him. I know she says it for his ears only but I hear her, “I’m so, so sorry about your mom, my boy,” I hear Jacob’s quick “thank you, Laurelle” and “it’s alright” but the two of us both know it is not.

My dad greets him too and then Sage is greeting him. They hug and then I sidle up to Jacob’s side, placing my hand on his lower back while I fiddle with the hem of his shirt. He presses a quick peck to my temple.

As my family heads over to the living room to sit down, I pull Jacob aside.

“You okay?” I dare to question.

“I am,” he says, sounding content. “I really am, I promise, your family makes me happy Tro. And okay yes, I do get nervous around them but that is only because I love you so much and I need them to like me because I have their precious boy all to myself a whole world away from them. I just want them to trust me.”

I blush bright crimson at his sweet words. “And they do. They adore you, Jakey. How many times must I tell you?”

“I don’t know,” he says bashfully. “Also,” he adds, “Nice lipstick, babe,” he teases as he swipes his thumb over my cheek. I grunt in playful annoyance.

“What colour is she wearing now?”

“Dark red, it looks nice on her,” he tells me.

“Sagey is growing up really fast,” I muse over as I walk us over to my family who are silent, most likely because they were trying to eavesdrop on our conversation, tsk, tsk, nothing ever changes.

Dinner is nice, conversation flows easily. Jacob opens up nicely and I think my dad is very impressed with him as they get along so well. They are going to be best buddies sooner than later, I do not know if that is a good thing or not to be honest. Sage thinks he is hilarious and my mother thinks I could not have picked anyone better that makes my heart very happy because Jacob got his wish of gaining their trust.

We will see them again tomorrow for lunch and then they are off to Los Angeles where my aunt stays.

That same night I am in bed waiting for Jacob to get out the shower. I can hear the water running and later I hear him singing lowly. I put the book I am reading beside me and then I just listen. I listen as he sings some Andy Shauf then switching to Charlie XCX. I smile broadly.

He will be okay, we will be okay.
