“The mom only started selling in order to pay for the child support and rent,” Valerie gasped.

“It’s expensive being a single parent,” Vaughn said.

“Have either of you seen the show ‘Weeds’?” Eddie asked.

Valerie sighed.  “Yes, and I know where you’re going with this.  Except she got half of Mr. Breyer’s money after the divorce, which was a considerable amount, and spent it all on moving as far away as possible and fighting for her kids.”

“Kinda feel for the poor woman,” Eddie mumbled.

Vaughn sighed.  “Nope, we can’t afford to feel like this.  She still evaded parole and kidnapped her three children.  If she really cared she would’ve gone out and found a proper job, like the rest of America does.”

“But, Vaughn, don’t tell me you don’t-“

His raised hand silenced Valerie.  “I agree; it’s unfortunate, the circumstances.  Mitch and Parker said they may have evidence that the kids were being abused by their father and we could all see their stepmother hates them.  But there’s a much more legal way to handle things than kidnapping.  Especially one at a time.”

“I’d have gotten them all at once and ran off to Canada.  Lay low for a while, work under the table until I could afford some plane tickets to a country we didn’t have extradition agreements with.”  The other two stared at Eddie in shock.  “I mean, if I were a criminal in general.”

“At least we’d know where to find you,” Valerie mumbled.

“Is this the house?”

“Looks like it.  143 South… yup, this is the place,” Eddie answered.  They made sure to keep a hand on their guns as they walked up to knock on the door.  An elderly lady answered.

“May I help you?”

“Yes, hello, I’m Agent Clarke, and these are my partners Fitzgerald and Grey.   We’re with the FBI and we’re looking for three missing children.  Perhaps you’ve seen their pictures on the TV?”

“Oh, yes.  That nice Asian lady spoke about them with that other tall, thin woman.  I remember them, now.  My granddaughter used to be friends with their mother,” she answered.

“Have you seen her at all recently?”

The woman shook her head.  “I’m afraid not.  I believe she went to prison!”

“Yes, well, if you happen to see or hear from her – or have any other information about the children, call this number.”  Vaughn handed her the paper with the hotline on it.

“I certainly will!  Thought I’m not exactly sure it’s a crime to steal your own kids.  With a father like that, too…” she shook as she shut the door.  Vaughn and Eddie eyed each other.  There was so much more depth to this case than anyone anticipated.  Unfortunately, their only job was to find the missing children, and then go home.  There was no way the Judge was about to have FBI in his family’s business any more than necessary.

“Helena called.  She said they received an anonymous phone call from someone claiming to have seen two of the kids playing in their street,” Victoria said.

“How far away is it?”

“Hardly five minutes.”

“Tell her we’re on our way.”
