“Agent Clarke! I need to speak to you for a minute,” Helena Moore said. She didn’t bother waiting for his reply, but instead walked back to her desk and sat down. She knew the power she held over others and no longer expected anything less than obedience.
“Is there something you need?” Vaughn asked.
“Yes, I am afraid you have forgotten to give me some paperwork from your last case. I still need the summary report from you,” she stated.
“Are you sure? I could have sworn it was with the rest of the papers,” he said.
She met him with a sharp gaze. “Positive. I checked twice, asked my assistant, and even checked my trash and emails, just in case. It appears to be missing completely.”
“I’m sorry, but I do have it saved on my computer. I’ll email it to you on the airplane,” he apologized.
“No, I need it now.”
“We’re about to go-“
“I don’t care, Agent Clarke. You cannot begin something new when you have yet to’ve finished something else, first.” She noticed the tightening of his hands as they crossed in front of his body. “I will not tolerate a sloppy unit leader-“
“They’re right here, Agent Moore. Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to be on our way to catch a child molester,” Simone said. After throwing the papers on her desk, she nodded half-heartedly, and headed back out the door. Vaughn fought to hide his proud smile of Agent Harvey.
“You’re lucky, Vaughn Clarke,” Helena said, a single angry eyebrow raised high on her forehead.
Vaughn bowed slightly, “Ma’am.”
“Better hope that next time you forget, your agents will continue to have your back.”
He paused at the door. “Unlike you, I know my teammates will always have my back, because they actually like me and are not afraid of me. I actually appreciate the work and effort they give in every case. And because I am not a tyrant, nor a slave driver, they respect me and we all have each other’s backs. Have a nice day, Agent Moore.”
The door clicked behind him and he choose a faster pace than normal. He was hardly afraid of Helena anymore, but she did have the power to fire him on the spot if she chose to. He was not about to get stopped by her right now. A few days away should give her enough time to cool down.
“What was that about?” Valerie asked once he entered the plane.
“She was trying to yell at him. I watched her assistant put the file back on his desk this morning,” Simone answered quickly.
“Geez. What’s been up her butt lately?” Parker asked.
“Yeah, feels like all she wants to do is hark on us,” Eddie added.
“It’s because she’s getting pressured from people from above,” Vaughn sighed.
“What did you tell her after I left?” Simone asked. “I expected you to walk out right after me, but you were saying something.”
Vaughn blushed, then chuckled to himself. “I told her you guys would always have my back because I appreciate your hard work and you all respect me and that she was a tyrant.”
“Hahaha!”
“Good for you!”
“Oh my God!”
