The day had been going smoothly so far. I had spent the morning reading old books in my room. It was almost lunchtime and I was getting peckish. I decided to venture down towards the kitchens in the hope of finding food. The dwelling felt different as I walked through it, empty almost. I wondered what was missing, trying to take note of all the paintings and sculptures to see if there were any empty spaces. Apart from that, it felt like it always did, cold and hard. The always immaculate stone floors felt like ice under my bare feet. I could hear bustling in the kitchen and the smell of food wafting through the hallways. mmm, Mariah must be making something special for lunch.
I entered the kitchen excited but stopped short seeing who it was making that wonderful sun.
"you can cook too?" I blurted out without thinking,
Xavier laughed with a confused look on his face "what do you mean"
I blushed "nope nothing sorry, mind slip," I said stepping further down into the kitchen and taking a seat at the bench.
Mariah was over one side of the kitchen rolling out dough for something and Xavier was at the main bench cooking god knows what.
"um, Xavier what are you doing cooking in the kitchen?' I asked walking over to stand beside him
Xavier looked up from his cooking "well what else do you do in a kitchen" he said with a laugh
Mariah huffed "washing dishes, cleaning bowls and mopping floors after two people spend the night throwing water around" she looked at me with a pretend glare on her face "Don't think I didn't notice Miss Fae" she said turning back to her rolling
I blushed again "Ah, sorry about that Mariah," I said sheepishly
Mariah laughed still looking at her rolling "also that remind me, Zariah left a message for you before he left this morning" she said
I looked up interested "yes?" I asked her wanting to know what Zariah had said, last time I had spoken to him he has seemed weird, almost mad at me.
Mariah looked up at Xavier than back at me quickly in one sweep "well before he left this morning for a couple of days he said to tell you that" she paused again looking at me with an asking look on her face
I smiled "go on, continue Mariah," I said
she nodded "okay then, he said that he is sorry for the way he acted and sorry that he didn't get to say goodbye but that to tell you more nights like the other will be sure to come and that he won't fail next time," Mariah said shaking her head slightly
I blush yet again "thanks, Mariah," I say looking down at what Xavier is cooking, "ah so what are you cooking Xavier" I say awkwardly aware of the weird tension in the room.
he coughed "Um just some bacon and eggs, I thought I would surprise you with them in your room" he looked away
Jesus, he wanted to surprise me? I ruined it coming down here damn. Ah well how was I supposed to know that he was here to surprise me.
Xavier pushed what he was cooking onto a plate and slid it over to me "here you go, all done." he said smiling
It smelt and looke delicious and I was excited to eat it "thanks so much Xavier" I said grinning "want to come up to my room well I eat it?" I asked on my way out of the kitchen.
He followed "sure why not, I wanted to talk to you anyway," he said as we made out way out of the kitchen.
Mariah called out from behind us "have fun kids" she said laughing to herself before the door swung shut cutting off her laughter.
Once outside my door he held it open for me as I carried the food tray through sitting it down on the table. I turned around "hey thanks for this food, by the way, it smells so good," I say dishing out some onto my plate and sitting down "so what did you want to talk about?" I asked
Xavier came so he was sitting down on the chair across from me, he shifted uncomfortably "well I ah, read through your information booklet again the other day after I found out you spoke Amari" he stood up and started pacing across the room "and well I realised just how perfect you were" he coughed "DNA wise of course" he said shifting his gaze from my face "I'm a scientist you see, I work in labs all day trying to find out why our women can't have children, It's a hard job" he sat down again fidgeting in his seat "I'm just going to spit it out" he shifted again this time looking me straight in the face "I think it is possible that your DNA could hold the answer to the infertility issue we have here on earth" he stopped and looked at me expectantly
I could feel my mouth drop open in surprise "what do you mean I could be the answer?" I asked
Xavier looked at me with a look I couldn't quite understand "well you see, your DNA is incredibly close to the DNA patterns of Terrestrials but you just happen to be fertile" he stood up again wandering around the room.
How could I be the solution to the problem Terrestrials had been trying to solve for hundreds of years. I knew my DNA was good but no this good. I was honestly shocked that this would even be considered by scientists, that a human girls DNA could solve such an advanced problem.
Xavier stopped wandering and turned to look at me once again "I know you must be shocked but there is a real possibility here Fae, you could be the solution" he said moving closer to me "All I ask is that you come into my labs and let us run some simple tests just to see if we have the solution we think we may"
I looked away from him trying to gather all the thoughts that were spinning in my head, being the girl that saved the Terrestrial race would be quite the title I thought as I sat there in silence on my floating chair. I could save them I thought. If I said no to these tests though I'm sure they would make me do it anyway The Terrestrials were not known for forcing things upon humans but I knew they would hesitate when their whole existance was a stake.
So I stood up strong and looked Xavier straight in the eyes "It would be my pleasure to let you run tests on me" I replied trying to be strong, this could be the thing that makes people remember me I think, this could be the opportunity that I always hoped the Chosen program would put forward for me, this could be the way I can make something of myself. Maybe I will make some money to send back to my family, they would be so pleased off me.
Xavier smiled "I am so glad you said yes Fae" he said sitting down "now are you done with your food, I can take it to the kitchen on the way out"
I grinned, this was a good thing for me I thought as I watched Xavier picking up the empty plates "thanks, Xavier, I am glad to help" I said standing up to see him out the door.
He stood in my doorway looking at me like he wanted to say something else but couldn't decide whether he should. His bright green eyes shone and glistened in the lights and I was transfixed by them. He coughed pulling me out of my trance "bye Fae" he said walking off. I shut the door behind him but as I did I overheard him saying something in Amari, It was weird and I must have translated it wrong but I swear he said, "got you now". I shrugged it of and went to find a book to read.
