Identity

Chapter 1:

Different

I've always been different. I know I am, and I always think about it being genetics, like maybe a great grandparent of mine had dark hair and neutral skin. Green eyes? Maybe, they weren't here for me to see. I'm different from my family who all had blonde hair and sea blue eyes, and I have neither of the genetics. 'Your special.' Mom and Dad always tell me. I always believe them, telling myself I was, although I know it isn't true.

"Darcy!" Mom calls out. "Were leaving, let's go!" I quickly glance at myself in the mirror, black leather jacket with black and purple dress, black flats, no make up, and my hair in its regular brown waves/curls.

"I'm coming!" I call back, rushing down the stairs.

"C'mon we're going to be late for Aunt Amy's party."

"Whatever..." I mumble, walking out to the car and hopping in. The car ride isn't that conversation filled, mostly Darby and I, my sister, talking about our relatives. As soon as we get there Darby and I are engulfed in hugs, telling us how much we've grown, how beautiful we are, the usual relative talk.

"God this is so lame..." I sigh, Darby and I standing by the snack table watching as everyone mingled.

"Christmas parties, no." Darby says. I take a sip of my ginger ale from the red party cup, bored.

"Why do we even attend these things?" I ask.

"Because we have to. If we didn't we wouldn't be here."

"Thank you for that little bit of information Captain Obvious." I sigh.

"What's wrong with you? Your usually so bubbly."

"I think I've made it clear I hate these things. I feel so out of place. All of you are blonde and blue eyed, I'm different."

"Your special-"

"No I'm not. Darby, being different doesn't make you'd special it makes you different."

"Hot temper." She rolls her eyes, taking a sip of her drink.

"Ew, there's Uncle Ned." I scoff, looking at the horrid excuse of a man.

"Ugh." She scoffs too.

"Get ready for a bunch of lectures on bugs..." I murmur as Uncle Ned nears us.

The Next Day

I hum along to a song as I get ready for school. All of my family thought I had a good voice, but I thought it was ok. Darby walks in, her blonde hair and make up done, but still in her hot pink bath robe.

"Darcy!" She exclaims. "Have you seen my red sweater?"

"No, now hurry up and go put something on, we have to leave in half an hour." Darby walks out, and I continue to hum to an old song I remember hearing on the radio when I was around three years old. That was my earliest memory, and I remember my father got angry for some reason, the way I remember the one boys voice...something that called out to me, something that was like I remembered it.

"Darcy! Darby! Come eat breakfast!" My mom calls out. Darby and I were polar opposites, she was girly, all about pink, pink, pink. While she described me as 'punk, punk, punk'. I wasn't gothic or anything, I just looked best in darker colors. I wore no dark make up or chains, I was a regular girl, blended in, but always pretty. Or always told I was. I look over at Darby as we run down the stairs. She was in her usual skirt and blouse, which made my roll my eyes. The only difference between us was she loved make up, and I hated it. I just saw it more of, if someone loves me, I shouldn't have to change, and that includes make up. Quickly we eat our breakfast, brush our teeth, and hop in the car with our dad so he can drive us to school. I hum aimlessly again, the song stuck in my brain, it was my favorite song, and I had no idea why.

"Darcy honey, what're you humming?" I hear Dad ask. I quickly look over to him.

"Oh. I don't know. A really old song." I murmur. It isn't long till we arrive at school, and I feel myself slowly begin to die inside. I hated school. "Bye girls, have a good day." Dad says as I slam the car door shut. I plug in my headphones and begin searching for the song on my iPod. I smash into someone.

"Watch where your going!" I hear someone say.

"Sorry!" I say quickly. I look over at them.

"Fuckin' freak, doesn't even walk straight." A prissy girl stands in front of me.

"Sorry?" I can feel the anger growing inside of me, boiling. It may be winter but I will throw her down.

"I guess she can't hear either," It's like she's putting on a show, amusing people. "I said your a fucking freak with walking disorders, and that's probably not the only one." My arm pulls back and my fist connects with her jaw angrily. Nobody talks to me that way. She falls flat on her butt, letting out a cry.

"Darcy Gold! Principals office now!" I hear Mr. Sanders bark.

***

"She got in a fight?" My mother and father sit on either side of me as we talk to the principal.

"Not exactly Mom, I punched a priss in the face."

"Quiet young lady I don't wanna hear a word from you!" Dad barks. I remain silent for the rest of the time, then when we leave I sling my black satchel over my shoulder, walking ahead of my parents angrily.

"Your grounded for a week." Mom says, as if it'll affect me.

"Cool." I murmur, hopping into the back of the car. The ride is silent, and I run upstairs and into my room as soon as we arrive home. It's not long till Darby arrives, and she comes straight to my room.

"Hey lil' sis." She sighs, hopping on my bed.

"What?" I ask blankly.

"I'm not going away till you tell me what happened."

"Darby, you saw. You saw what that girl said to me."

"I know..." She murmurs. "But I've never seen you react that way. Why'd you do it?"

"Because she's right! I am a freak I am a misfit! I am not meant to be here!" I say loudly.

"Darcy..." Darby murmurs, pulling me into her arms and hugging me. I don't cry, crying was for weak people, and I liked to convince myself I was strong, but then again, I'd gotten used to hiding what I really felt.

"Darby, I just want to be alone." I murmur. She nods, leaving the room, leaving me alone. Alone, misfit, different, freak. All names I've been called, all names I probably was.
