Chapter 22:
Speech
3 Days Later
The past three days I've been staying with my grandmother, but today I had to go to court. Christmas Eve was tomorrow, and I was excited to spend it with Mom and Dad. I wasn't sure what to get them, but that wasn't of importance at the moment. I wore a grey and black shirt, tucked into some black dress pants. I also wore some black flats and a black cardigan. I was never really one to wear light colors. My grandmother wasn't driving me to the courthouse, well, she isn't my real grandmother, just Darby's. Anyway, Mom and Dad are super protective of me now, they hired a limo and a security guard to escort me to the courthouse. As of right now, we were pulling up, and my heart was racing. I step outside and the air is frosty, but the security guard and I quickly rush inside. The courthouse is empty, all except for my parents, and all my uncles, including Aunt Per. A huge smile overtakes my features. My feet quickly take off and I jump into Mom's and Dad's arms first, then Per's. Then, I hug Uncle Zayn. He looks down at me with guilt.
"Darcy...I'm so sorry...I'm so sorry..." He repeats. I squeeze him tighter.
"It's ok...you didn't know." I whisper back. I pull away and smile at my three other uncles, Liam, Niall, and Louis. They all three envelope me into a hug, and I hug tightly back.
"Baby Direction!" Louis exclaims.
"What?" I ask.
"It's what I used to call you." Louis replies.
"I've missed you all so much." I smile sadly.
"No touching." Orders a nearby officer. I look down the hall, trying my best to hold my glare back at Sandra and Alex. I back away from everyone.
"Will you be in the crowd?" I ask.
"Nervous?" Dad asks.
"Kinda. I mean, what if nothing happens?" I was talking a little in the court room to try to persuade them my way, which was with my biological parents. Saying I was kinda nervous, was an extreme understatement.
"Don't think about that, something will." Mom says, smiling a little hesitantly. Even she didn't believe her own words. The security guard hands me all my files.
"Oh, and Darcy, I have something else for you." Dad says.
"What?" I ask. Dad reaches into his pocket, pulling out a sliver chain with a paper airplane necklace on it. A smile spreads over my face. "I thought I'd lost it..." I whisper.
"Have it." He says. "I'm so happy your back little girl," he says, "I love you."
"I love you too." Tears well in my eyes.
"Don't cry." He says, hugging me. I close my eyes for a second.
"You too." I chuckle a bit, pulling away. I turn and hug Mom.
"I love you so much..." She whispers, kissing my forehead.
"I love you too." I whisper back, pulling away.
***
(Ok people I'm not going to say this again, Alex is Darcy's kidnapper dad who changed his name to Andrew after he kidnapped her but kept the name Alex when he was Harry's and Ariel's private investigator and Sandra is Darcy's kidnapper mom who changed her name to Chime after she kidnapped Darcy.)
"We'd like to call Darcy Gold to the stand." The judge says. I hated the way they used my 'last name'. My last name is Styles, not stupid Gold! I stand up, palms sweating and heart racing. Carrying the heavy files, I look into the little 'crowd', where Louis and Niall gave me reassuring looks. I purse my lips, sighing and nodding. Taking a seat, I position the microphone to where I could speak properly.
"So, Darcy, you claim to have been kidnapped by Chime Gold and Andrew Gold. Correct?"
"Yes sir." I respond to my 'interrogator'.
"And you also claim to have remembered the experience?"
"Yes sir." I repeat.
"Could you please describe what it was like for you?"
"It was around before my third birthday. Of course, I only know that by fact, but I have um, a vague memory of it happening." I exhale before I begin. "I was in the car with Andrew." I nearly spit his fake name."I was screaming and crying and he did nothing about it because he just wanted me to shut up. I kept screaming for my mum and dad but...they couldn't save me. They had no idea what was going on. I mean, how could they? Then Andrew slammed on the brakes, and my forehead smashed against something and it was bleeding very badly. Andrew yelled at me, telling me to shut my mouth and that my parents were not my parents anymore. I... I guess that's it's really." I whisper.
"Care to share your persuasion speech?" The interrogator asks. I nod, pulling out my speech from one of the files.
"Yes." I nod. Letting out a sigh, I begin. "A child torn from their home, a child tricked into believing, a child who found her way. That's. Who I am. I went so long, feeling like a freak, a misfit. But I'm not, I wasn't. I wasn't a misfit because I wasn't in the right place, they were misfits, I was the real actual person who belonged. When I found out, I was devastated really, terrified. I didn't know what to do, so I told Darby. Darby was...understanding, but still hesitant. She kept my secret about leaving, and when I finally did, I felt free. Free of all the barriers between my parents and I. Those people, Chime and Andrew, were the people who took me away, tore me from my home, that's why they deserve time. Time to reflect, time to think, and time in prison. Thank you." All my real family members smile at me, and I smile back, walking from my place. Speeches are speeches, and mine held power and emotion.
