Your Point of View.
"Baby, this is your new school," my mother whispered, filling the silence that loomed in our small car since we left our two-door car garage back home.
Nodding my head, I gave her a kiss on the cheek before getting out the car to enter the large building.
Closing the car door, I waved a goodbye to my mom and started making my way towards the front doors of Jonah McGregor High School.
Walking into the main office, I took a seat in one of the uncomfortable chairs they provided, and silently waited for someone to notice me.
Playing with the hem of my shirt, I watched as the secretary talked to a boy with curly hair in an unprofessional way.
"Are you sure you haven't turned eighteen yet Odell?" I heard her giggle, making me roll my eyes in distaste.
Did she not find anyone her age attractive?
"No Mrs. Jordan, but you'll be the first to know," he responded while leaning more onto the counter and into her caked face.
Shifting uncomfortably in the plastic chair, hopefully, these two love birds will take a break from each other in a few.
Bringing the letter my mother wrote for me from my front pocket, I unfolded and read it to make sure she gave them a full understanding of my condition.
"Yes, honey?" The lady finally asked, trailing her green eyes from the boy to mine.
Getting up from my seat, I shifted my bookbag from my right to left shoulder before walking nervously to where they stood.
Handing the now crumbled piece of white paper to the lady, I brought my eyes down to the counter.
After hearing no one speak for the longest period of time, the secretary finally spoke.
"You can't talk and is easily frightened?"
Nodding my head 'yes', I was utterly embarrassed by my choice of doing things and how I acted.
"Go sit down and I'll deal with your dumb ass later," she said in an authoritative voice making me coward back into my seat.
She was wrong for calling me stupid because no one was stupid and before waking up today, I thought I could be normal for my circumstances.
Of course, I was borderline autistic and a mute, but could I not be seen as a normal individual in this society?
Letting a single tear stray down my warm cheek, I was determined not to be riled up by her harsh words.
Wiping the salt from my eyes, I watched as the boy looked over at me for this first time with a frown before leaving the secretary to do what she was doing beforehand.
Typing her long fingernails on the keypad, she glanced up at me through her glasses a few times before calling me back up there.
"Here's your schedule," she handed me a piece of yellow paper. "You can read right?"
Nodding my head, I took the paper away from her hand and walked straight to my first class of this long, dreary day.
________
Odell's Point of View.
Focusing hard on the classwork that was given to me by Mrs. Darnell, I didn't know someone entered the classroom until the teacher cleared her throat.
Glancing up from the math problems, my eyes came in contact with the girl from the office earlier.
From her brown skin to her beautiful hair, she was absolutely gorgeous.
"Class, we have someone joining us today. Darling, could you please introduce yourself," Mrs. Darnell asked from the comfort of her desk.
I knew she wasn't going to say anything no time soon so I took matters into my own hands.
"She doesn't talk," I informed the teacher without taking my eyes off the girl.
Hearing my voice from the back of the classroom, she gave a small smile.
Giving her a smile back, our teacher told her to take a seat in one of the empty seats in the classroom.
Choosing to take a seat beside me, I couldn't help, but feel happy inside.
As we went back to working on our classwork, I could hear the whispers from my classmates about her.
I paid them no mind because I was too busy trying to figure out why the silence from her.
