You Are My Sunshine

I got this song stuck in my head one day and well...you get the gist...

You sat at the side of the bed, your head propped up against your crossed arms. The figure in the hospital bed lay still, a mask -an oxygen mask, was it called? You don't quite remember- covered their nose and mouth, their breathing even and steady.

you are my sunshine

my only sunshine

You were that only one still here. Everyone else had left after dropping off their gifts and greetings, almost as if they wanted to leave as quick as possible.

You couldn't really blame all of them for that.

you make me happy

when skies are grey

It was unnatural for them to be quiet, to be so...still. It was unnerving. They were always filled with energy, always on the go, never staying in one place and spreading joy wherever they went. Putting smiles on others' faces and giving away laughter.

you'll never know dear

Always bright and shining, like the sun.

You find yourself gripping their hand.

how much I love you

Why was this happening? Why did this have to happen to them? To them, who was always smiling and happy, someone who actually mattered to the world.

Someone who deserved to live.

There's a burning sensation in the back of your eyes.

Just, why not you instead?

You, who is nothing. You, who is nothing but a waste of space. You who has given up on life entirely.

Why won't death claim you instead?

please don't take

Your vision blurs for some reason and there's a sudden dampness on your arm.

You realize that you are crying.

The tears you've been holding back start to flow and you hold on to the limp and pale arm -supposed to be healthy and moving and ALIVE- with both of your hands.

"Please wake up," you whisper, voice hoarse and broken, "Everyone misses you, miss your smiles and laughter, your bright, shining eyes."

Eyes that are supposed to be radiant, eyes that are supposed to be OPEN and brimming with mirth.

Your throat constricts. "I...miss you"

my sunshine away

"Please wake up."

More tears start to drip from your cheeks and you let out a sob.

"I need you."
