Hime, first-born of the Karuta Empire, hadn't been pleased with the sudden marriage arrangement thrust upon by her parents. A truce with their age long enemy? At this time, when victory was finally well within their grasp? Honestly, what were her parents thinking -it was obviously a ploy, a trap meant to lower their guards and strike when a moment of vulnerability shows. Their nemesis -after all of the hate, wars, and bloodshed- wants peace?

It was enough to arouse (her) suspicion.

Though perhaps she was being too...harsh. Maybe they have gotten sick of the wars and the grief it brought along with it. The despair and melancholy of their fallen warriors' family and friends had made them lose their fervor in this seemingly endless war.

(She knew that deep down, she felt that way as well. Her people could only bear so much before they start to lose hope, before they break.

Funny how much hopelessness could affect people; just how much it could destroy one's will to live.)

"You remind me of him in ways I couldn't even begin to fathom."

"Hime, wh-"

"you're not him and yet sometimes I see him in you. But you are you, you're your own person and yet all I see is him"

She starts crying and John is frozen, unsure what to do because this is Hime, sweet kind courageous powerful sometimes childish Hime who was one of the few people who took him seriously.

"-and I feel horrible for it. You and him aren 't the same yet I still see- I can't- I just--"

John hugs her and she stiffens, tears still flowing freely.

"Look, I don't know this guy you keep comparing me to and I may be just your host-brother, but know this Hime," he smiles, "I'm your friend first and foremost, and always will be."

Hime sniffles, wraps her arms around his neck and whispers "thank you" and "I'm sorry" over and over while John pats her back reassuringly.
