The next morning I woke up before Eugene did. Eugene was softly snoring to where it was comforting and not loud and obnoxious. I slowly climbed out of bed, grabbed a pair of short jeans and shirt, and walked to the bathroom. I changed into the clothes and realized my ring was still on my finger. Eugene was the love of my life. He was different than the others and that is what I loved about him. I walked out and saw Eugene was awake in the kitchen. "Morning." I greeted him. "Morning." Eugene greeted me. We walked up to each other and did a small kiss. "Today I gotta go to with Abraham to find a place to start making bullets." Eugene informed me. "You can do that?" I asked. "Yes." Eugene told me. "Holy hell that is genius." I told him. Eugene smiled at me. I wrapped my arms around Eugene. He did the same to me. "Be careful, okay? Remember what I taught you." I told him. "I will. I love you, Ashley." Eugene told me. "I love you too, Eugene." I told him. I looked up at him and we kissed. I released and let him go. Before he walked out, he looked back and smiled. I smiled back. Eugene balled his hand into a fist, kissed his ring, and held his fist to me. I did the same. He walked out. I knew he would be brave. He will be braver than ever, I just know it. When I walked outside, I saw Carl close the gate behind Eugene and Abraham. I approached him. "Hey, bullet dodger." I called to him. Carl turned around to me chuckling. "Hey, Mrs. Porter." Carl greeted me. "What have I told you, Carl? Call me Ash or Ashley." I reminded him. "I know but you know how my dad raised me." Carl reminded me. "I know. How are you doing?" I asked him. "Better. You?" He asked. "Great. I hope he does well out there with Abraham." I told Carl, referring to Eugene. "He will. I have seen him and you practicing. Without you, he wouldn't be able to use a gun. Without you, I wouldn't be alive." Carl explained to me. "Oh thanks." I told him. Carl then jumped onto me into a hug. I hugged back. "You're like a mom to me, you know." Carl said to me. I rubbed through Carl's long hair. "I didn't know. But I always felt like you were a son to me." I told Carl. Carl sniffed. "Thanks." He said. "Thanks, as well." I told him. Carl released and we both walked down next to each other. Rick approached us. "Daryl, Denise, and Rosita went on a medicine run, so I need you two to go organize the weaponry and food." Rick informed us. We both nodded. We began walking but Rick stopped me. "Thanks for saving my son." Rick whispered to me. "It's no problem." I told him. Rick pecked my cheek and let me go. I catched up to Carl and we arrived at the weaponry first. We organized the weapons and I gave some hints at a gun to Carl. Later, we went to food and started making sure things were in order. While we were at it, we ate some chocolate pudding. We walked out to the front gate opening. Carl and I were confused for I found Abraham, Daryl, and Rosita carrying someone to the infirmary. I realized who it was. "Eugene!!" I screeched. Carl held me back, trying to calm me down. "No let me see my husband!!" I screamed. I broke free from Carl's grasp but was caught by Rick. "Please Ashley! Chill!" Rick yelled at me. "How can I when my husband is hurt?!" I screamed. I had no more strength and just collapsed to the ground, crying. I covered my face up, like Eugene did when he was scared. But this time I was scared. I noticed that Denise never came in. On cue, Daryl was walking towards me. I stood back up and hugged Daryl. He, surprisingly, hugged back. "It's okay. Eugene will be alright." Daryl comforted me with his southern accent. Daryl was a brother like me. He always looked out for me and was protective over me than anyone else. He also made sure Eugene didn't get into trouble when I wasn't around. "Where's Denise?" My voice was muffled for my face was on Daryl's shoulder. "She got killed. We're going back for her." Daryl told me. Poor Denise. She wasn't the brightest but she was smart. That was when Rosita ran out of the infirmary. I let go of Daryl. Rosita was doing the head motion for us to come in. I ran towards the infirmary with Daryl following. I slowed down once I reached the door. Rosita walked in. Then me. And then Daryl. I looked and saw my unconscious husband on the bed. Reminds me a month ago. Daryl shut the door behind him and walked over to where the window was, looking out it. I walked closer and my husband was breathing steadily as if he were sleeping. His shirt was half-way opened with a patch a little above right hip. I held his hand. The door suddenly opened. Abraham. He walked in and shut the door behind him. "Rick's coming." He announced. "How is he?" He asked once he walked next to Rosita. I was sitting in the chair on the left, with Rosita next to me, and then Abraham next to her. "Bullet just grazed him, but it's a good thing we got him back when we did. Antibiotics we picked up could save him from an infection. Could save his life. That's what Denise did." Rosita explained. I looked up at the two. "Thank you for getting him back." I thanked them. "No biggie." Abraham said as Rosita smiled at me big. Suddenly coughing stirred us. It was Eugene. Slowly he opened his eyes and looked at us. "You here?" Rosita asked him. "Present." Eugene announced. I chuckled for that was a typical thing Eugene would say. "Good." Abraham said. I gripped on his hand which made him look over at me. "Thanks for scaring the shit out of me." I told him. "Now we're even." Eugene said referring to a month ago. We all chuckled. He turned back to Abraham. "I was not trying to kill you. I was looking for a moment." Eugene explained to him. "Well you found it." Abraham told him. "Do you apologize for questioning my skills?" Eugene asked Abraham. Looks like they had an argument earlier. "I apologize for questioning your skills. You know how to bite a dick, Eugene. I mean that with the utmost respect." Abraham told him. "Welcome to stage two." He added. "Don't need to welcome me. I've been here a while." Eugene said. Wait, what?! "Hold up! Back me up here, please!" I exclaimed while chuckling. Abraham informed me on what happened. I was trying to keep my laughter in but I couldn't. Well my husband for sure showed some bravery. Abraham, Rosita, and Daryl then left to give us some privacy. I gently got in bed next to Eugene and wrapped my arms around him. Eugene did the same to me. "That was some bravery shit you did." I said. "Well I kept my promise." Eugene mentioned. I nodded. "That you did." I said. I laid my head on his soft chest, while Eugene rubbed his fingers through my short hair. Eugene then kissed my head and we fell asleep at that moment.
