After waking up I sat there for a few minutes. Then I stood up and rolled over Ballence. He was gone. He had blood dripping out of his mouth and nose. His whole body is was covered in blood. I looked down and saw blood on my thighs. I didn't know how to get back to allied lines. Or how I survived this. I walked over to one of the dead Germans he had a rifle in his hands. I pulled his rifle out of his hands. I then check his pockets. I found 3 spare clips for my new rifle, a bloody map, and a cracked compass. The compas was useless. The map had a hole straight through the middle.
I felt bad leaving Ack Ack and Ballence behinds but we had to. Someone had to cover us. I had been telling command but they keep saying there dead. They say the patrols only found dead Germans and Americans. So I gave up. I knew I had ordered them to there death. I felt terrible. Especially since I was going back to the states in two weeks. So only Sid would be left. He would probably get out in another squad.
I decided it would be best to just walk along the road. So I started walking. Then I realized I should move only at night. I found a small stream. I fille my canteen and layed down under a tree. I searched my pockets for some rations. I found a k-ration and ate ig. Then I heard voices.
