We thought we were ready. We had no idea what the Germans were about to through at us. So we braced for your usual counter attack. A few platoons. Sid was busy at the aid station. Simmons came walking in with the radio and said,"Command sir." I grabbed the phone. It was simple stuff our cordinates for reinforcements. When suddenly someone said,"Incoming Germans!" Then the fight was on. Our two 30 cals started opening up. More Germans kept coming. They were popping out of know where.
I was talking with one of the tank commanders when I checked the radio. It was command saying that they needed to speak to my co. I walked into the command post and gave the radio phone to Grinder. I leaned on the wall while he talked. He was almost done when the whole town opened up. I hadn't heard the lookout yell," Incoming Germans!" So I was completely unprepared. Grinder yelled get us artillery. I yelled our cordinates into the phone. Then our artillery screeched overhead. Followed by our naval cannons humongous shells. After that the Germans pulled back.
After the skirmish I went around the village. I was looking for any of our wounded. I found one guy who couldn't walk. I looked at his legs and found no bullet  holes. Then I looked at his ankle the very back was blown open. I picked him up and carried him back. I bandaged it up best I could. Suddenly planes appeared. They were binning us. I hurried the wounded into a cellar. The tanks moved away. I spent the rest of the night with my gun aimed at the door ready to protect the wounded with my life. Suddenly the door flew open. I fired hitting the door. Someone yelled American American! I stoped and Ack Ack walked in. He said we gotta get the wounded on the jeeps more Germans are coming. So we loaded them up at they took off.
